Happy Chef
Asian$$
If you like your meal fast with big servings and no frills, then Happy Chef ticks all the boxes. The abrupt service matches the ‘get-in, get-out’ vibe, but that hasn’t stopped this cheap eat from becoming a Newtown favourite (it just adds to the charm). Scour the back-lit pictures above the counter and point to your desire among the mix of Malaysian, Chinese and Indonesian dishes on offer. The laksa is popular, but for a spice-hit, go for the fried Sichuan eggplant. Grandma’s tofu is the culinary equivalent of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, proving to be a wonderful sweet mess of pork, chilli and (of course) silken tofu. Happy chef equals happy customer!
