The Brookie is vast yet welcoming. Carpet and wood panelling keep things cosy, and the staff are uniformly smiley and helpful. Although you queue at the bistro counter to order, dishes arrive at your table in a timely fashion. Self-service salad piled up in a bowl turns well-cooked fish and chips into an almost healthy meal. The spicy coconut Thai sauce on the day's special of grilled flathead may appear strangely white in colour, but is judiciously tasty without swamping the fish. The everyday special of do-it-yourself steak plus salad for $12.50 is a key attraction.
