Tien Dat

Vietnamese$$

What with wrapping your own rice-paper rolls, the sound of pho being slurped, and customers scavenging for a rare free table, Tien Dat is lively. It looks more functional than pretty and it delivers 'a good feed', an indelicate expression until you observe the happy lunch crowd. Entrees are standard; spring and rice-paper rolls dominate. There's a 'Vietnamese adaptation' of tempura, with a heavier, oily batter. Better to go straight to the more interesting and substantial mains, such as steaming bowls of noodle soups or mee goreng. Grilled lemongrass pork buns are fun, coming with instructions to build rice paper, meat, cucumber, mint and coriander into ungainly but delicious rolls.
