It’s one of the most important competitions for top-line players and aspiring stars of water polo this year and it is being live streamed thanks to a deal between News Corp and Water Polo Australia.

The Australian Water Polo League (AWL) kicked off on Australia Day in Sydney with five action-packed days of competition across five different venues in the KAP7 Cup.

The second tournament was played over three days in Adelaide from February 4.

Now we are in phase two of the AWL which sees the competition played at venues across Australia with the finals series scheduled to be fought out in Sydney from April 8-10.

The competition was due to be a 11-team structure, but the indefinite postponement of Western Australia’s border opening has forced organisers to reshuffle the tournament. Western Australia’s two clubs UoW and Fremantle will not compete in any of the pre-season tournaments, but will take part in the play-off series.

News Corp is committed to live streaming 88 matches across the tournament on all of our mastheads.

The Australian Water Polo League follows on from the Summer Slam in Brisbane for 16, 18 and 20 and under players.

It is a crucial event for players who are bidding to make women’s and men’s national teams in 2022 with Australian selectors monitoring performance across the event.

It is also an important stepping stone to the Paris Olympics where our women’s team are aiming to make the podium and our men’s team have their own aspirations.

“There will be selections based on the AWL for both the men’s and women’s (Australian) teams who will be travelling in March to the Intercontinentals in Lima, Peru,’’ said triple Olympian and high performance boss Charles Turner.

“That is a qualifying tournament for the World League.

“We also have the world championships in May in Japan coming up.’’

CLUB TEAMS AND PLAYERS TO WATCH IN THE AUSTRALIAN WATER POLO LEAGUE

DRUMMOYNE DEVILS

Brooke McClean is a centre forward for the club and a strong player who draws defence and exclusions. Has been around the Aussie Stingers squad for a number of years and played at the World Uni Games.

Morgan Baxter is the captain of the Drummoyne Devils and a left-hander. A good, fast player with good visions and a talented shooter. He has been in the Aussie Stingers squad for a number of years.

Blake Edwards represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympian and is an attacking driver and high goal scorer. An integral member of the Drummoyne Devils.

AJ Roach is a three-time Olympian and son of rugby league legend Blocker. Known as the enforcer for the Devils.

Tyler Martin and Mitch Emery played at the Rio Olympians and bring a wealth of experienced to Drummoyne.

CRONULLA

Lena Mihailovic competed at the Tokyo Olympics last year and is a good driver. She creates opportunities, is a counter attacker and also a good shooter

Joanne Whitehorn is a journey woman with plenty of experience in water polo. She also boasts a good understanding of the game and is a smart player who reads the game well.

Tristan Glanznig is a young and talented attacking driver who has show plenty of improvement in recent years. He is also an excellent shooter.

Nic Brooks is returning to the Cronulla club after playing for Drummoyne in recent times. A prolific goal scorer who is unstoppable in counter attack.

UNSW WESTS KILLER WHALES

Kiara Holden is a left hander who has a good knowledge of the game. Has played in multiple world junior championships and a highly rated junior. A good reader of the game, excellent passer, smart player and has a knack for creating opportunities.

Daisy Carter is a driver and outside shooter. She is experienced and a loyal Wests club player.

Nathan Power is another player who competed at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo. He returns to the Australian Water Polo League after an extended period playing professional overseas. Is a rock in defence and looking to evolve his game to offer more in attack.

Charlie Negus has been in the Sharks squad for a number of years. Is expected to stand up and confirm his position in the Australian team. An excellent shooter and will be key to Wests’ success at the tournament.

UTS BALMAIN TIGERS

Gen Longman is a goalie who originally hails from Western Australia and was in the Tokyo Olympic squad. Will be looking to cement her spot in the Aussie Stingers team, good passer, confident goal keeper, good communicator.

Katie Dudley has been at Stanford in the US College and is a strong centre forward with a focus of attack. Has a good backhand and the ability to draw defence.

Matt Wilson is a young, strong centre forward who is in the extended Aussie Sharks squad. He is looking for a big Australian Waterpolo League season to confirm his position in the team ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Daniel Lawrence is an experienced player who will look to lead and steer the team. He has an excellent game sense and decision making abilities.

HUNTER HURRICANES

Keenan Marsden is well know for his game understanding and water polo IQ. He is a crafty player who was recently added to the Aussie Sharks squad for the first time. He will be looking for a big campaign in the AWL.

SYDNEY UNI LIONS

Hannah Buckling is a dual Olympian after playing at the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games. She is considered one of the sports best centre backs in Australia and internationally. A natural leader and good goal scorer, swimmer and has impressive technical skills.

Keesja Gofers is a dual Olympian from the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games), driver, key player for both Sydney Uni and thee Stingers. A goal scorer, good swimmers and boasts good technical skills.

Chaz Poot is returning to the fray after taking a break from the national team. He is now back in the pool pushing for selection and vying for a spot in the team to compete at the Paris Olympics. Has attacking flair and is a crafty and skilful player.

Goran Tomasevic: Missed summer competitions in Sydney but is returning to play in the national league. Made his Olympic debut in Tokyo and is a big, powerful and mobile centre forward who will be difficult for the opposition to contain.

UWA TORPEDOES

Claire Durston is a goalkeeper turning heads. Has been in Aussie junior squads for a number of years and is seen as a goalie for the future for the Stingers. An excellent passer and is solid in goals.

Pippa Pedley is a versatile player and excellent shooter who can place a driving game and can also play centre forward. She will be key to UWA’s success at the Australian Water Polo League title in 2022.

Dayna O’Leary is a driver who has been in Aussie squads for numerous years and is a stalwart of her UWA team.

George and Andrew Ford. The brothers have returned from rival clubs to play for the Torpedoes this season. George is a dual Olympian while his brother Andrew made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games last year. George is a formidable centre back, and Andrew a great driver.

FREMANTLE MARLINS

Glencora McGhie played at noth the London and Rio Olympic Games and is a key part of their side. A great playmaker and creator for Fremantle. He is also an excellent shooter, has good legs and stealing ability and brings invaluable experience.

Zoe Arancini played at both the 2016 Olympics in Rio and last year’s delayed Games in Tokyo. A standout scorer for the Aussie Stingers in Tokyo. A dynamic player, good driver and with the ability to score under pressure.

Jess Zimmerman is a centre back and counter attacker who was also part of the Aussie Stingers squad in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics last year. Zimmerman is also a very good outside shooter.

Nick Elphick is an outside shooter and known for his accuracy. A prolific goal scorer and key to Fremantle’s chances in this year’s Australian Water Polo League competition.

Joel Swift is a long term Fremantle player who competed at the Rio Olympics. A member of the Aussie Sharks squad for a number of years who brings a wealth of experience to the club.

Damien Williams will be key to Fremantle’s success at the tournament. A goal keeper who is pushing for selection in the Aussie Sharks squad and will be looking to do so through his performance in the Australian Waterpolo League.

ADELAIDE/HOBART JETS

Alyssa West is the wider Aussie Stingers squad and has great physical characteristics for a goalkeeper with a tall body and long arms. Born in 2001, she gained exposure at the World Youth Championships in a team that came fourth.

Tayla Dawkins is a youngster with talent, a good swimmer who reads the game well as is well know for her tenacity and never giving up.

Joey Parnis is the captain and goalkeeper of the Adelaide Jets and has been a long time stalwart in Adelaide water polo circles. A great leader and is also pushing his claims

also looking to push his claims for Aussie Sharks selection.

VICTORIAN PHOENIX

Rowie Webster. Even those who don't follow the sport have probably heard the name of this triple Olympian form the London, Rio and Tokyo Games. Webster was the Aussie Stingers captain for the Tokyo Olympics and is an experienced player and natural leader.

James Ogilvie is a stalwart for Victorian water polo and will look to bolster and help develop a new look Phoenix team in the Australian water polo league.

Tyson Mutsch is a young player and an excellent swimmer who swims competitively outside of water polo. Had an amazing tournament for Victoria at the recent Summer Slam in Brisbane. Originally from Albury and has just moved to Melbourne to pursue his water polo career.

QUEENSLAND THUNDER

Gabriella Palm played at the Tokyo Olympics where she took over the helm of No. 1 goalkeeper position. She has experience to burn and is an excellent communicator. The experts say “‘the ball likes her’’.

Abby Andrews is another Tokyo Olympian and a quality left hander. A player on the rise who made her games debut in Japan last year. She is known to read the game well, boasts an excellent pass and is dangerous when she escapes those guarding her.

Charlize Andrews is an excellent driver and a physical player. She can play as a driving centre and creates opportunities for herself and teammates. Good work ethic and knows how to score a goal.

Bronwen Knox is a 4x Olympian who competed at the Beijing, London, Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games, A strong centre back with oodles of experience and a former Olympic captain. She is also the most capped Australian female player of all time.

Nic Porter is returning after a number of years in the US and will be formidable in goals for Queensland Thunder. He is looking to cement his position as No. 1 goalkeeper in Australia.

Marcus Berehulak is a young centre back. A big AWL campaign could see him push his way into the Sharks squad so there is plenty at stake for this young gun who is looking to play in the US College system. A promising junior on the rise.

Rhys Howden is a Olympian who played at the Beijing, London, Rio and Tokyo Games. He is a prolific goal scorer and was one of the leading scorers in Tokyo. Brings with him a wealth of knowledge and a great understanding of the game.
