That’s a wrap! The first tournament of the Australian Waterpolo League is done and dusted.

After five days of tough competition the winners have been determined in the first tournament of the Australian Water Polo League, the KAP7 Cup.

The final day of competition was held in Newcastle after four days at assorted indoor and outdoor venues in Sydney.

And at the end it was the UNSW Magpies men’s team and Drummoyne Devils standing on the winners dais.

ROUND FOUR RESULTS AND REPLAYS BELOW

“It’s just been so great to get our competitive fix in again,” said Olympian and Magpies player Nathan Power.

“The competition is incredibly important.”

Power said particularly pleasing for the Magpies was the way they were able to succeed with for new players in the lineup.

“Each game presented a different challenge and yet we were able to come through with the wins,” he said.

The Devils came home in a thriller to win the women’s title with a 9-8 victory over the Balmain Tigers.

“It was a real nailbiter,” said Drummoyne player Morgan Baxter.

“It came down to a bit of perseverance I think.

“We knew we were tired but we just stuck with it.”

(Men’s) Sydney Uni Lions def Hunter Hurricanes 11-6

Sydney Uni and the Hunter Hurricanes were sitting in fifth and sixth place respectively on the ladder before this match with the Lions boasting just one win from their previous four matches and the Hurricanes winless in the tournament.

The Lions took the match to end the tournament in fifth place with their second win.

Sydney Uni’s Tom McJannett did the damage in the 11-6 victory, scoring four goals.

(Women’s) Sydney Uni Lions def Hunter Hurricanes 13-2

Sydney University were battling to stay in the top three in this game while the Hunter Hurricanes were chasing their first win of the tournament after four outings.

They didn’t get it.

The Lions claimed a 13-2 victory in the final match of the tournament.

Alexie Lambert, Sienna Green and Keesja Gofers all scored two goals each in the Sydney University win.

(Women’s) Drummoyne Devils def UTS Balmain Tigers 9-8

The top of the table clash in the women’s competition.

Both teams went into the match with three wins but UTS Balmain Tigers were ahead on the ladder due to their draw in the fourth game they had played.

This meant the Devils had to win to take out the Cup.

At halftime the two clubs were locked at 5-5 after two intense periods.

But at game end the Devils were the ones with the win and the KAP7 Cup crown.

Georgia Southern scored three goals and Zoe Arancini two in Drummoyne’s 9-8 victory.

(Women’s) ACU Cronulla Sharks def UNSW Wests Killerwhales 17-8

There was plenty to play for in this anticipated women’s match.

Both teams went in with one win, one draw and two losses under their belt after the opening four rounds in Sydney from Wednesday to Saturday.

But it was Cronulla who stamped their authority on the match from the get-go.

Despite a late rally by the Killerwhales, who piled on four goals in the final period, Cronulla took the match 17-8.

Tokyo Olympian Lena Mihailovic slotted in four goals in the first period and one in the last to end the game as the topscorer for Cronulla.

Teammate Danijela Jackovich scored three.

(Men’s) UNSW Wests Magpies def ACU Cronulla Sharks 14-3

The only team in either the men’s or women’s competition to enter the final day of the KAP7 Cup without a blemish on their scorecard.

The Wests Magpies have being the pacesetters of the entire competition with their strong performance from the opening day of competition.

And that didn’t change in the final game in Newcastle.

The Magpies secured the men’s crown with their 14-3 win over Cronulla.

Charles Negus scored four goals, Tim Putt three and James Gillfeather two for the Magpies in their victory.

Milos Maksimovic, Matija Durdevic and Nic Crowe scored Cronulla’s points.

(Men’s) Drummoyne Devils 8-7 UTS Balmain Tigers

This was a match between two clubs who came into the game with two wins each from earlier rounds.

However, the Drummoyne Devils were ahead on points in third place going into the match in Newcastle thanks to a draw in an early round with the Cronulla Sharks.

On Sunday neither side gave an inch in the first half with the clubs locked at 5-5 at half time.

Balmain edge ahead in the third but were outscored 3-1 in the final period, allowing the Drummoyne Devils take the game 8-7.

Aidan Roach and Marco Marceta both scored two goals for the Devils.

Daniel Lawrence smashed in three for Balmain.

(Women’s) UTS Balmain Tigers 9-9 UNSW Wests Killerwhales

The Balmain Tigers were the only undefeated team in the women’s competition going into this game. But in the last match of round four, the Tigers met their match in their old UNSW rivals, Wests Killerwhales.

The match ended in a draw but it was a thriller.

Sienna Hearn broke the 8-8 deadlock late in the fourth only to have Kiara Holden save the day for the Killerwhales and force the entertaining draw.

(Men’s) UTS Balmain Tigers 5-7 UNSW Wests Magpies

The UNSWWests Magpies went into this game as the only undefeated team of the Australian Waterpolo League KAP7 Cup.

They left it with more success, having extended their winning run at the tournament to four straight victories.

The Magpies claimed a 7-5 early evening victory over the hosts of round four.

It was an intense tussle which had the crowd vocal and fired up.

Tim Putt scored three goals and Angus Lambie two as the Magpies top scorers.

Mitch Robinson slotted in a double for Balmain.

(Mens) Sydney Uni Lions 11-10 ACU Cronulla Sharks

Sydney Uni came home strong for a 11-10 victory in this match with Cronulla - their first victory of the Australian water polo league.

The Lions have Chaz Poot to thank for the win.

The inform Syd Uni gun hoisted himself out of the water with a personal haul of five goals - the must by any player in the fourth round of the KAP7 Cup player at Balmain.

Poot is attempting to make the Australian men’s squad ahead of the world championships and assorted international tournaments this year.

“The big goal is to try and make it to the Paris Olympics,” said the 23-year-old.

Tristan Glanznig and Milos Maksimovic both scored four goals each for the Sharks.

(Men’s) Drummoyne Devils 10-7 Hunter Hurricanes

Hunter Hurricanes launched a spirited second half fight back which turned this game between the Devils and Hurricanes into a real entertainer.

The Devils ended up taking the winning points 10-7.

Olympian Blake Edwards fired in four goals for the Devils with Marco Marcela and James Kolanda both scoring twice each.

Key to the Devils’ success in thwarting the Hurricanes’ late charge was multiple Olympian AJ Roach, who has recently retired from international competition.

“I’ve been with this club since I was nine and I’m loving just playing for fun,” he said.

Hunters top scores were Keenan Marsden and Spencer Burdack with three and two goals respectively.

(Women’s) Drummoyne Devils 17-5 Huter Hurricanes

Two-time Olympian Zoe Arancini was drafted into the Drummoyne Devils side in the wake of WA having to pull out of the Australian water polo league due to border issues.

Arancini, who has yet to decide whether she will campaign on to the Paris Olympics in 2024, has been one of the standouts for the Devils throughout the tournament.

On Saturday she blasted in two goals in the Drummoyne Devils’ 17-5 victory over the Hunter Hurricanes.

Julie Marsden, Lily Harris and Tasman Wooley all scored three goals for the Devils in the match.

Lillie Carrick was best for Hunter with two goals.

(Women’s) ACU Cronulla Sharks v Sydney Uni Lions 9-9

The round four action kicked off at Dawn Fraser pool at Balmain with a ripper match between Cronulla and the Sydney Uni Lions in the women’s competition.

In a physical game, neither side could break away with the teams ending the match locked at 9-9 at full time.

“Both teams were hungry for that win. There was no underdogs, no top dogs. I love games like this,” said Lions Olympian Keesja Gofers.

Gofers scored three for the Lions with Danielle Morrissey netting two.

Danijela Jackovich and Tokyo Olympian Lena Mihailovic topscored for the Sharks with three goals each.

RECAP: OPENING ROUND OF KAP7

Day one of the Australian Water Polo League KAP7 Cup is done and won and there were plenty of great performances. There were also a few surprises.

The host club Sydney Uni fell in both of their opening round matches while the men’s UNSW Magpies poured on 15 goals in a big win over the Drummoyne Devils.

Milos Maksimovic fired in five goals in Cronulla’s win over the Hunter Hurricanes and UNSW player Kiara Holden scored six in her team’s narrow loss to the Drummoyne Devils.

A much-anticipated match in the women’s competition turned out to be a lopsided one.

The hosts of the opening round of the Australian water polo league were trounced by Balmain in the final match of round one.

Balmain started with a bang, rushing away to a 6-1 lead at halftime in their match against Sydney Uni.

By the third period they were 9-1 up.

While Sydney Uni rallied in the final stanza, Balmain ran out 11-5 winners.

Kate Dudley and Sienna Hearn produces three-goal performances in the match to be Balmain’s standouts.

Olympian Keesja Gofers scored two for Sydney Uni to be their top scorer.

(Men’s) UTS Balmain Tigers def Sydney Uni Lions 11-7

It was a pool battle tipped to entertain and that’s exactly what this Australian water polo league match-up between the UTS Balmain Tigers and Sydney University Lions did in the final men’s game of round one.

Balmain came out hard and fast against the host club to take an early 3-1 lead over the Lions.

By halftime the Balmain men were in the control seat at 4-3 and heading into the third break the Tigers had an unassailable 8-4 lead over the Lions in the physical match.

In the final period both sides found the back of the net twice before the Tigers ran out 11-7 victors over the Lions.

Harry Sanderson smashed in three goals for Balmain with James Kremers-Taylor and Daniel Lawrence scoring two each in the big win. Tom McJannett scores three for the hosts.

(Men’s) UNSW Wests Magpies def Drummoyne Devils 15-7

After witnessing their women’s team fall to Drummoyne in the first match of the day, the UNSW Wests Magpies came out with intent in their afternoon match.

At the halftime mark of an entertaining and feisty match played by numerous Australian Olympians – including AJ Roach and Blake Edwards – the Magpies led the Drummoyne Devils 9-4.

The Wests Magpies extended in the third period, outscoring the Devils three goals to one to

lead 12-5 at the break.

Neither side took their foot off in the final period with the Magpies adding three and the Devils two goals for the final 15-7 result in the bruising encounter.

James Gillfeather was one of the stars of the Magpies with his three goals. Charlie Negus, Ntahan Power and Jarred Gilchrist all scored tow goals each in the win.

James Kolenda was best for the Devils with two.

(Men’s) ACU Cronulla Sharks def Hunter Hurricanes 16-8

In the first men’s match of the day, Cronulla put points on the board early with a patient Hunter finally replicating around five minutes into the match.

Hunter had their chances but back-to-back goals from the Sharks saw them take a 3-1 lead into the first break.

The Sharks added four in the second period to Hunter’s two goals for a healthy 8-3 halftime lead.

Cronulla upped the ante in the next period with five goals to take a 13-4 lead into the final break.

Hunter staged a mini comeback in the final stanza but the early goal blitz from Cronulla saw them take a convincing 16-8 victory.

Milos Maksimovic was a standout with his extraordinary haul of five goals.

Best for Hunter was Corey Allan with his three goals.

(Women’s) ACU Cronulla Sharks def Hunter Hurricanes 13-2

The Hunter Hurricanes drew first blood in the second match of the day at the Peter Montgomery Pool at Sydney Uni but for the majority of this game it was all about the Sharks.

In a low scoring first period, it took Cronulla until the final two minutes to put first points on the board and equalise.

The Hurricanes and Cronulla scored their second goals within a minute of each other in the second period before the Sydney team fired in two for a (4-2) jump they carried into the break.

Having found their momentum, Cronulla extended to 8-2 in a purple patch of form in the third period.

The Sharks added another five goals in the final stanza for their emphatic 13-2 victory over the Hunter side.

Danijela Jackovich starred with four goals with Jana Liessman and Lena

Mihailovic nailing two each. Emma Preece scored twice for Hunter.

(Women’s) Drummoyne Devils def UNSW Wests Killerwhales 15-13

UNSW had the honour of scoring the first goal of the KAP7 Cup tournament in the opening minute of what turned out to be a close and entertaining tussle with the Drummoyne Devils.

The Devils retaliated just seconds later and after numerous attempts on goal, went ahead to lead 2-1.

After UNSW levelled, the Devils again rose to the challenge for a third and fourth goal and 2-4 lead.

UNSW then scored to enter the first break trailing by just one (3-4). Two minutes into the second period and the Devils were back on the scoreboard (5-3).

UNSW again responded before the Devils scored three in a row to stretch out to a four-goal lead (8-4) at the break.

UNSW were first to score in the third (5-8) and after the Devils responded, fired in another two in quick succession to reduce their deficit to two (7-9).

The Devils stayed patient to score a 10th and 11th with another two by UNSW leaving them trailing by just 9-11 ahead of the final period.

UNSW moved to just a goal down (12-13) in the final two minutes in a great fight back.

But the Devils steadied to take the match 15-13.

Kiara Holden was the match topscorer with six for UNSW.

Zoe Arancini starred for the Devils with four goals while Jolie Marsden, Brook Mcclean and Morgan Baxter scored three each.
