GAME 2: ACU CRONULLA SHARKS V UNSW WESTS MAGPIES, MEN

The UNSW Wests Magpies have been enjoying a golden run in the Australian water polo league.

They navigated the recent KAP7 Cup in Sydney without a blemish on their scorecard and were tipped to dominate their latest match of the AWL at Cronulla late on Sunday.

And that’s exactly what they did.

Two early goals proved they have lost none of their form with the Magpies taking a 2-6 lead into the final period of their match in Cronulla.

By game end the Magpies had a 8-2 win to their name.

“It was a tough first half. Both team played great defence,’’ said Australian Olympian and Magpies powerhouse Nathan Power who scored six goals in the match.

“The good thing on our end was we stayed constant and started to convert our opportunities.

GAME 1: ACU CRONULLA SHARKS V UNSW WESTS KILLERWHALES, WOMEN

There’s generally nothing quite like home waters in sport.

The Cronulla Sharks made the most of their home advantage to take control of their round six match with the UNSW Wests Killerwhales early in the piece.

By halftime the hosts were up four goals to two and looking in charge.

But that changed late in the third when the Killerwhales fired in two goals within seconds of each other to trail by just one - 6-7 - at the break.

In a ferocious final quarter, Cronulla just managed to hold their rivals at bay for a 9-8 victory.

Cronulla’s Danijela Jackovich scored three goals for the hosts with Pinky Rewi Henri firing in two.

Kate Hughes nailed three goals for her club with Kiara Holden contributing two to the Killerwhales close call.

“I think we played really good defence today. Holding a strong team like them to under 10 goals is a testament to good defence,’’ Jackovich said after the game.

“They second half they came out strong but at the end of the day we held strong, played like a team and came away with the win.’’

WHY UNSW MAGPIES ARE DETERMINED TO KEEP WIN RECORD INTACT

There is good reason the UNSW Magpies are determined to keep the recent winning run intact in the Australian water polo league on Sunday.

With Australian squad selections coming up, there is the potential for the side to be without a number of their leading lights later on in the home and away season.

The UNSW West Magpies men’s side will play the ACU Cronulla Sharks in the latest outing of the Australian water polo league at 5:15pm on Sunday.

This match, along with other games in round six, will be live streamed exclusively on News Corp websites, including The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Adelaide Advertiser, Hobart Mercury and Courier Mail and you can watch in a player above on game day.

The Magpies were the only team at the recent KAP7 Cup in Sydney to end the event with an unblemished record.

“We started strongly and during that first week each game presented a different challenge, a mental one, controlling the game, holding a team off with a fightback, that sort of thing,’’ said Tokyo Olympian Nathan Power.

“The positive thing for us is that each win was different.

“Our focus in the Australian water polo league is getting ourselves in a strong position for final.

“We are facing a few weeks when our players will go away to represent Australia.

“We could lose up to five or six players.’’

Power said the matches between the Drummoyne Devils and UTS Balmain Tigers should prove interesting viewing.

“The other games should be good competitive ones, There’s big rivalry between these two clubs,’’ he said.
