SYDNEY UNI V DRUMMOYNE DEVILS PREVIEW

Sydney University Lions veteran Johnno Cotterill is expecting plenty of passion as old rivalries reignite in their match against the Drummoyne Devils on Sunday.

He is also hoping for a top performance from his side against a team he says is one of the benchmark’s of the Australian water polo league in 2022.

The men’s match at 4.30pm and the women’s game at 5.45pm on Sunday are part of a live stream deal between News Corp and Water Polo Australia.

The matches will be shown in the player above on game day with replays later available after games.

“They are one pushing for the title so we want to make sure we push them,” said former Olympian Cotterill.

“Drummoyne are a benchmark and we want to see where we are.”

“We have a combo of old experienced guys like me and some young guys coming through.

“Things have been going well. We just need to work on our consistency.”

The Sydney Uni Lions currently sit in fourth place on the men’s ladder with Drummoyne in second place behind UNSW Wests Magpies.

The women’s ladder is closer with the Drummoyne Devils in fourth place and Sydney Uni Lions in fifth place with just a win separating the pair. Queensland Thunder lead with a perfect record of 10 victories.

“We are in fourth and we want to maintain that and we’re looking at winning all our last games,’’ said Devils player Morgan Baxter.

“Ideally we’d like to move up to third if we can. You don’t want to come up against Queensland Thunder too soon.’’

The top four teams in both competitions qualify for the AWL finals with two more added in after a stand-alone tournament between teams ranked fifth and sixth and from Western Australia.

Returning for the Devils briefly will be captain Zoe Arancini who has been away with the Australian team in Peru.

“We will have them back this weekend then lose Zoe because the Perth teams are being introduced and she was on loan to us from Fremantle,’’ said Leichhardt physiotherapist Baxter.
