Keen to retain top spot as the competition closes in on the Christmas break, Waratah did enough to roll Nightcliff by 15 points in their Battle of the Beaches match at Gardens Oval.
Chief among the players to shine for the home side in their 7.15 (57) to 6.6 (42) victory were hard running midfielder Scott Carlin and two pieces of magic from forward Jayden Magro.
Recruited from Terang in Victoria, Carlin said his team was aware that Nightcliff would be desperate for a win, but his own side was keen to stay in contention for top spot at the turn of the season.
“We knew they were going to be tough tonight especially after they got hold of us at the start of the year and that was an added incentive to win,” Carlin said.
“The scoreboard doesn’t look too good but that’s footy – I would back our forwards any day of the week.
“I play mid field / back flank at home but get thrown around a bit here but I’m happy to play anywhere for the team.”
Nightcliff opened full of intensity and had Cameron Ilett picking up valuable possession seemingly at will but his dominance at the drop of the ball wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard and it was Tahs that led at the first break after goals from Magro and Joel Stevens.
The Tigers lifted in the second where running players Ryan Mu (goal) and James Gow (two goals) found space and they booted four goals to one for the term to give the visitors the lead at the long break.
In the low scoring game goals were gold especially for Tahs who were wasteful in front, however, it was Magro who broke the back of the Tigers defence with pieces of magic that were contrary to the scoreboard.
On two occasions, the left footed dynamo found himself hard up in the left forward pocket and twice he booted blindly but truly to register extraordinary goals.
The Tigers had no answer, and a goalless final quarter was a reflection of their lack of forward options especially when they had pretty much shared possession with Tahs.

Livestream Preview
Nightcliff travel to Gardens Oval needing to halt a four-match losing streak, but top of the table Waratah aren’t going to make life easy for the travelling side.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 6pm, Saturday.
The Tigers have long been the side to beat in the NTFL, but have struggled in the midsection of the 2022-23 season.
They will take some confidence in their last win coming against Tahs, while their recent rut has also come down to a couple of strokes of misfortune.
However, Waratah currently sit top of the table and will have no intention of losing their position, particularly when they’re playing at home.
They’ve also got the squad that can go all the way with strong players right across the park from Dylan Collis down back to Darcy Hope in the forwards.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
