AFLW draft hopefuls and NTFL rising star winners will be part of the NT Talent Academy girls side heading south on a Coates Talent League mission this week.
The Territory’s best under-18 talents will be in action in two clashes, with Sunday’s battle against the Murray Bushrangers live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV.
That match will kick off at 11.30am and will be followed by the Bushrangers’ boys taking on the Western Jets at 1.40pm.
A team brimming with talent will make the trip to Melbourne, including the NT News 2024-25 NTFL Rising Star winner Shakalia Gardiner-Dunn.
Gardiner-Dunn was a standout of the season for eventual premiers St Mary’s also winning the best on ground medal in the grand final after scoring three goals against Nightcliff.
The young gun scored the only three majors in their drought breaking premier league victory against a Tigers outfit that didn’t bow down until the final kick of the match.
She’s joined by her two preceding Rising Star winners in Tatyana Perry and Marika Carlton, as well as the Central Australian Football League’s Danika Carlton.
All three have already been earmarked for their talent and impressed in the Australia under-18s v All Stars showcase in April.
Another Central Australian standout Bella Foster from Pioneer has been named in the squad, after winning the 2024 Rising Star accolade in the Alice Springs based competition.
Younger Territory talent is also filtering in with under-16s MVP Layla May from the Darwin Buffaloes and All-Australian selection Peggy Rock from Nightcliff who has won her fair share of junior best and fairests.
The NT team is coming off a strong showing in 2024, which included wins over AFL Cairns and the Murray Bushrangers, and are hoping to go further this year to push a case for the Draft in December.
For the Bushrangers, it has been a mixed season so far. After winning their first two matches they have since gone on a three-match losing streak and will be looking to respond heading into this Sunday’s clash.
And they could fancy their chances against the NT, which also faces the Sandringham Dragons on Thursday night as part of the two-game trip.
Then comes a historic homecoming on June 14 when they play their first ever Coates Talent League match at TIO Oval 2 against the Calder Cannons on June 14 from 5pm.
