Replay: NTFL - Nightcliff v Tiwi (Round 4)

A Brodie Filo masterclass and some brilliance from a Tiger of the future has led Nightcliff back into the winner’s circle, demolishing the battling Tiwi Bombers by 94 points.

In stifling conditions at Nightcliff Oval, Filo racked up a mass of possessions and continually pumped the pill deep inside the Tigers’ attacking half.

Defensive maestro and reigning Nichols medalist Daniel Bowles was also exquisite by foot and had a hand in repelling most of Tiwi’s rare forays forward.

And in a strong sign for future seasons, speedy second-gamer and NT News Rising Star nominee Phoenix Joe Pool was electrifying with two goals, causing Bomber coach Brenton Toy to move his best asset, Harley Bennell, to guard the 16-year-old before half time.

Tiger forward Michael Mummery was also singing from the same song sheet, kicking four and adding a further layer of X-factor to Nightcliff’s forward structure which was missing Trent Melville.

The icing on the cake for the Tigers’ rebound win, after losing last week to Palmerston by six points, was defender Nathan Brown, in his 200th match (including NT Thunder games), who drifted forward and kicked a goal just before the final bell.

The Bombers failed to place enough pressure on the ball carrier, with Filo often left to his own devices while the visitors could not get their running game going and dropped easy marks.

Toy at least tried to manipulate proceedings from the sidelines, unafraid to change his midfield mix to get some clearance advantage, with John and Stanley Tipiloura having stints in the guts.

Earlier, the Bombers were competitive with a couple of chances to score but were ultimately overwhelmed by numerous Tigers running in waves off half back, with ample space to calmly find an option.

Tiwi, however, found it difficult to link up or find a forward target; a diving mark from Stanley Tipiloura was one of a few bright spots from an opening quarter which only yielded just one point.

With Bowles everywhere in defence, the Bombers sometimes went the wrong option; Jack Adamson’s risky, across-ground pass was chopped off and became the starting point for another Tigers major.

Even Bennell, who was easily Tiwi’s best on the field, was guilty of sloppy disposal.

His defensive clearing kick from the goal square fell short of the target in dangerous territory and led to another Nightcliff six-pointer.

While Tiwi were more competitive after half time, the match was done and dusted well before then.

After the game, 200-gamer Brown said he was proud to rack up the personal milestone.

“It’s massive,” Brown said of his achievement.

“You never think you’re going to play that many games. It’s been an incredible journey.”

While he said the Tigers were committed to playing team-first, structured footy, he allowed himself a bit of extra flexibility in the final quarter.

“I shifted myself, I was the only person who was allowed today to come from the backline and kick a goal,” he said with a grin.

They come against a Tiwi side who have not won a NTFL match since 2020, but have bolstered their list this year.
