A star-studded Magpies claimed one of their biggest wins in recent history beating an experienced Nightcliff Tigers in front of the Palmerston faithful.
Tigers stormed to an early lead taking the game on from the off, but the Magpies turned up the pressure to win 10.8 (68) to 9.8 (62).
It was a packed house at the Cazalys Arena with Palmerston not only playing Eddie Betts but other former AFL names including Travis Varcoe and Neville Jetta.
But Nightcliff with the week off behind them and plenty of experience of their own were more than up for the challenge and out to prove big names aren’t everything.
Daniel Bowles, the joint 2021-22 Nichols Medallist, made his return to the Tigers fold and was quick to assert himself finding targets up front with his sweeping left boot.
Experienced stars Cam Ilett, Shaun Wilson and Brodie Filo were also busy throughout the opening exchanges outmuscling their opponents.
South Adelaide forward Sam Overall was another key inclusion for the Tigers and a big target in front of goals.
Having weathered an early shower of goals Palmerston finally managed to strike back when the other 2021-22 Nicholls Medalist Eric Guthrie burst through the midfield and found Betts.
The Magpies turned on the pressure from there strangling Tigers out of the contest bit by bit.
Palmerston’s link-up men find Josiah Farrer, Baxter Mensch and Tristen Waack found their rhythm as the game wore on, and with Betts up front the scoreboard continued to tick for them.
Nightcliff for their part held their own and even as their foes looked to race ahead did enough to reel them in and a Jack Hammond goal put them back ahead in the final term.
But Palmerston’s pressure game meant Tigers couldn’t captalise on that advantage and instead Magpies charged back in front with a Rhai-Arn Cox goal.
And that was enough to seal the deal for the Magpies, who now sit on top of the table after three rounds of competition.
“We’re going to enjoy this one and I think we’re capable of some bigger wins this year,” Geelong West standout Mensch said.
“Everyone is up and about and the list has got a lot stronger this year and the culture has gotten stronger as well.
“It mainly came down to our pressure. We wanted to stick with them for four quarters and our pressure was great all night and I don’t think they kept with it very well.
“I’m enjoying it here. I’m not used to the big width of the ground and I’ve got more freedom here playing a half forward role. I’m enjoying life up here.”

Both Nightcliff and Palmerston are in for a test when they come face to face in what promises to be a belter finale to Round 3.
And the NT News are here to livestream the game exclusively for you.
Nightcliff enjoyed a week off to replenish their troops after the opening weekend and could come out better for it.
Long-time standouts Shaun Wilson, Cam Ilett and Brodie Filo were among the best for the Tigers in Round 1 and will be looked to once more to fire.
However, they’re coming to the Magpie nest where Palmerston, complete with an army of new recruits, will be aiming to impress.
Baxter Mensch has been one of the finds of the season while former AFL star Eddie Betts stood tall in a stellar Round 2 comeback for the Maggies men.
