An inaccurate Darwin Buffaloes pulled through in the dying moments to survive a potential Tiwi Bombers upset.
Buffaloes had all the possession for much of the game, but 22 minor scores had them scrapping through to win a tight 7.22 (64) to 9.6 (60) match, their second win of the season.
Bombers had the start they were looking for keeping the ball in the hands and getting it to the right end of the field.
Excitement machine Adam Tipungwuti and Nathan Scagliarini were two who had plenty of the action early on winning the contests and putting Buffaloes on the back foot.
The Bombers, who lost by 154 points in Round 2, were also best served by former GWS player Sam Darley and VFL standout Mason De Wit who both were key in in clearing the ball.
It was almost eight minutes before the first points went on the board when former Gold Coast Sun Harley Bennell took advantage of a loose ball to soccer in the first goal.
It took some big efforts from Buffaloes’ Kaine Riley and Bradley Stokes who constantly looked to turn defence into attack gifting chance after chance.
But for all those early opportunities the Double Blues were unable to kick a major in the first quarter with TikTok star Thomas Baulch and captain Jarrod Stokes both missing for behinds.
An early second quarter goal from Kyle McBean, followed by a Baulch major, looked to change those fortunes, but also reinvigorated the Bombers.
Scagliarini and Darley continued to see plenty of the ball, while Bennell ensured his side kept their heads up when the Buffs went past them.
And those leaders around the pack saw Tiwi’s confidence soar with Stanley Tipiloura kicking three goals as part of one of the Bombers best passages in the past three years.
Buffaloes meanwhile dominated the possession with the experienced heads of Jarrod Stokes, Liam Holt-Fitz and Ryan Pendlebury getting their heads over the ball.
Their dominance of the ball didn’t pay off until deep into the third quarter when possession started to turn into goals for the likes of Hassan Ahmat-Watkins.
But still Tiwi came spurred on by Bennell and two late goals by Travis Tambling had them ahead once more.
It was, however, a short-lived lead as Baulch kicked through a heartbreaker.
“They haven’t started the comp well, but they had some ins and were actually really good, which is good for the comp as well,” Pendlebury said.
“It came down to grunt in the end. We sort of threw the game plan out the window in the third quarter.
“They went to play slingshot and we just tried to match them to beat them at their own game, and if we kicked a bit straighter it might have been a bit easier.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW
An exciting match-up is in store when Darwin Buffaloes come head to head with the Tiwi Bombers.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you.
Buffaloes might have taken a knock to their confidence in their Round 2 loss, but this is still a side with plenty of promise.
Jarrod Stokes and Bradley Stokes were particular standouts against Waratah last week, while new recruits Dom Brew and Liam Holt-Fitz had their moments of brilliance.
They will be on the hunt to return to winning ways almost right away when they come up against a Tiwi side who last week shipped over 200 points.
Despite the loss there’s still plenty to like about this Tiwi side who have talent and experience in spades.
They just need to put together that four quarter effort on game day to prove to the rest of the comp what they’re capable of.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
