There were 19,106 number plates reported stolen across Victoria in that time, up from 18,083 the same time the previous year.
Thieves targeted 168 cars around Werribee and 159 in Hoppers Crossing, ranking the suburbs among the 15 worst in the state for number plate thefts.
Reservoir (330), Dandenong (297), St Albans (282), Craigieburn (261), Frankston (258), Preston (240), Brunswick (196), Epping (194), Coburg (190), Footscray (179), Noble Park (177) and Broadmeadows (170) round out the list.
But while number plate thefts continue to rise across the state, the total number of offences in Wyndham dropped 13 per cent from 808 in the eight months to September 2017 to 698 over the same period last year.
But Werribee and Hoppers Crossing remained the top hot spots during that time — with 210 and 175 thefts reported respectively — followed by Tarneit (127) and Point Cook (81).
Number plate theft has been linked to more serious crimes, including petrol drive-offs, robberies and burglaries with stolen plates making it harder to track down the offenders.
Drivers are urged to use one-way screws on their number plates to make it more difficult for thieves to remove them.
