‘Tinder date from hell’ sparked 18km freeway fail for drunk DJ

An up and coming DJ who got drunk and drove more than 18km on the wrong side of the freeway after the “Tinder date from hell” has revealed what led to her dangerous driving brain fade.

An up and coming DJ who got drunk and drove more than 18km on the wrong side of the freeway after the “Tinder date from hell” has narrowly avoided jail.

Estelle Lahausse, 23, today pleaded guilty over the incident on September 10 last year, where she drove the wrong way down the Princes Fwy between Little River and Werribee, narrowly avoiding crashing into oncoming traffic.

A 700ml vodka bottle was found on the front passenger seat of Lahausse’s Holden Barina and she blew more than four times the legal alcohol limit when she was intercepted near Duncans Rd, Werribee about 10.20pm.

The court heard Lahausse, who has a regular Saturday night DJ gig at Leftbank in Southbank, had been “feeling lonely” when she decided to go on a date in Williamstown with a man she met via dating app Tinder.

Lahausse spent two hours drinking at the man’s house, along with some of his friends, but the night went sour when the men started trying to pressure her into having group sex with them.

Her defence lawyer said a panicked Lahausse jumped in her car to get away from the “sleazy, drunken men” and tried to drive home to Pakenham.

It is not clear how she ended up travelling from Little River to Werribee and Lahausse’s lawyer said his client had very little memory of the night’s events but she was “so ashamed”.

He told the court Lahausse had been diagnosed with PTSD after she witnessed a car mow down pedestrians at Flinders St and “walked into a pool of blood” during the 2017 attack.

Since being charged, his client had completed a road trauma seminar and started a six-week drug and alcohol program at Windana in St Kilda and stated she would “stay single for the rest of my life”, he said.

Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz said while she accepted Lahausse had suffered through “a tinder date from hell”, this was a very serious example of dangerous driving.

“At speed, at night, on the wrong side of the road, drunk — it doesn’t get much worse,” she said.

“It’s remarkably lucky she didn’t kill herself or others on the road.

“You have been the victim (of a serious traffic incident) and now find yourself the perpetrator in circumstances where, quite simply, I’m staggered no one was injured that night.”

Ms Mykytowycz convicted Lahausse and sentenced her to 300 hours of community work. She must also undergo alcohol abuse and mental health treatments and she has been disqualified from driving for 29 months.

“This has been a difficult sentencing exercise for me,” she said.

“If you had just one driving charge of another nature I would have considered jailing you but you have come to this court as someone of otherwise good character and ... I have come to the conclusion that by the thinnest of margins the sentencing principles in this instance can be met by a community corrections order.”
