“They are made fresh every day,” owner Mal Campbell said.
“Customers come from all over Melbourne and from down on the Peninsula when they can.”

OKKA PIES
624 Mountain Highway, Bayswater
The Bayswater favourite has been running for 30 years, with its cauliflower and cheese pie a huge hit with customers.
Co-owner Luke Price took over the business with two partners two and a half years ago.
“We encourage all our customers to call and place orders so they get the freshest pies possible,” he said.
“When we get our orders we call our butcher and he prepares the meat so there’s nothing frozen.”
Okka Pies also offers catering packs, filled with other goodies including party pies, quiches, and mini-pizzas.
Its beef and bacon pie is another favourite.

TONY’S PIES
309 Buckley St, Essendon, 341 Somerville Rd, Kingsville,
Fittingly opening its doors in 1984, the same year the Bombers won the flag, Tony’s Pies is an Essendon institution.
Owner Tony Gavaghan said he and his wife Kim converted an old corner supermarket into a bakery specifically to bake pies.
“I learnt the art of pie making from Rolf Lie, the doyen of pie makers,” he said.
“Rolf was one of the first people to see that you didn’t have to be a cake shop that made pies, or a bread shop that had a few pies.
“If your pies were good enough, they could be a business in their own right.
“The main ingredients in a top quality pie are meat, seasoning, quality margarines, fresh vegetables and a production team dedicated to producing the best pie we can.
“We use quality lean beef which we buy from our local butcher rather than deal with a boning room.
“We make our own seasoning here in our bakehouse from a recipe Rolf developed back in the 70s. We don’t add flavour enhancers or additives.
“We make about 26 different varieties of pies, pasties and specialty rolls every day.
“We would average about 1000 to 1500 pies a day depending on the weather and time of year.”
Bestsellers include the traditional meat pie, steak and mushroom, spinach and onion quiche, and chicken and vegetable.
HUEY’S BAKEHOUSE
15 Darryl St, Scoresby
The Scoresby bakery’s pies are a hit with customers from all over Melbourne.
Owner Gail Hewitt previously told Leader the bakery supplies wholesale family meat pies to various butchers in the area, and as far away as Berwick, Somerville and Eltham.
“We have a huge range of pies (that are) baked every morning,” she said.
“You get people coming in and asking for a certain type, and if we haven’t got it they say ‘Damn, I’ll be back tomorrow for it’.”
On Knox Leader’s Facebook page, Matt Kleverkamp gave Huey's pies the tick of approval.
“Always coming up with awesome combinations,” he said.
“Huey’s Bakehouse in Scoresby Village are the best I’ve ever tasted,” Guy Pagliaro said.

The Country Cob Bakery, which has stores in Kyneton and Boronia, took out five national titles and 14 gold medals at the annual Australia’s Best Pie & Pastie Competition in Sydney earlier this year.
Co-owner Ryan Khun said Country Cob took out the most gold medals and national titles of any bakery in Australia at this year’s competition.
“Our most popular pie is still the plain beef pie and we sell around 2000 pies each week at both stores (in Kyneton and Boronia),” he said.

Along with classics like the steak and cheese and chunky steak, the more adventurous pie fan can enjoy a lasagne pie or vegan spaghetti bolognese pie.
Co-owner Aaron Donato said they made everything in house, from the pastry to the sauces and all the fillings.
“We spent a lot of time before we opened getting our pastry right, getting our fillings as tasty as we can, but we also tweak and improve things all the time,” he said.
The business sells about 2000 pies a week.
“The Big Thief Burger Pie (which used to be called the Big Mac Pie until we got a letter from a big company that rhymes with DcMonalds) is always a hit – ground beef, American cheese, pickles, onions and a special sauce on the side,” Mr Donato said.
“The classic Chunky Creamy Mushroom Pie and the Steak & Cheese are big winners too.
“We’re constantly churning out new and interesting pies – every week we do a pie of the week where we try to push the envelope as far into flavour town as we can.
“Some recent ones have been a Ramen Pie, Cubano Pie, HSP Pie and a Dan Dan Mien Pie.”
