A creative duo are redefining the meaning of pies with their weird, wacky and wonderful creations.
West Footscray’s Aaron Donato and his business partner Scott Blomfield opened up their pie shop, Pie Thief, six months ago in Footscray.
The store boasts a range of 40 unusual pie combinations including a lasagne pie, nacho pie and a pie based on a McDonald’s Big Mac.
“We start off by asking what’s delicious, and then whether it can go in pie form and whether it would be more delicious than it originally was by putting it in pie form,” Mr Donato said.
“Sometimes the answer to that is no but in the case of the lasagne and nacho pies it was a yes, and they really work.”
The 32-year-old said he had always wanted to open up a pie shop.
“It’s kind of a pipe dream that I’ve had for years to own a pie store,” he said.
The most popular pie is the lasagne pie, which has a bolognese base for the filling, a layer of bechamel sauce, a layer of pasta and then more cheese on top.
“It’s quite a rich pie,” Mr Donato said.
But he said his personal favourite was the potato massaman pie, which is completely vegan.
“I’m a real meat eater but that one I can eat all day long,” he said.

The pair are always experimenting with new flavour combinations and have some exciting plans for the summertime.
“We’re going to start playing with some cold savoury options so these 40 degree days can have some cool relief,” Mr Donato said.
The shop also stocks an array of sausage rolls and milkshakes, including a rainbow coloured milkshake made with Kellogg’s Caticorn cereal.
Pie Thief is located on Barkly St and is open Mondays to Saturdays from 7am to 4pm, and 9am to 4pm on Sundays.
