Grabbing a hot jam doughnut (or two or three) is a must for many visitors to Preston Market.

Sam Carnibella has been running the business for 13 years, with all doughnuts made from scratch.

“I’m dedicated to always making a great product,” he said.

“People just say it’s an awesome doughnut.

“It’s not only the taste, it’s the texture; our doughnuts tend to have a little bit of a crunch on the outside and a nice fluffy inside.

“It’s also about the quantity of jam; we put plenty of jam in, and it’s just the all-round package that people love.

The van even has an automatic jam gun, that enables lots of the gooey goodness to get into the doughnuts.

“When we’re in full flight making doughnuts (the gun) is also a bit of an entertainment thing for customers, (watching it) shoot jam into the doughnuts,” Mr Carnibella said.

“People, especially kids, just love to watch that.”

The van is open on market days from Wednesday to Sunday.

Customers have been tucking into the hot jam doughnuts from this popular roadside van in Melbourne’s east for more than 45 years.

Kostya Baksheev and his wife Nadia purchased the business two and a half years ago, continuing the tradition of serving up old-school jam ball hot jam doughnuts.

“It’s a very old recipe; nothing has changed ingredient wise, nothing has changed van wise,” Mr Baksheev said.

He said customers travel from all over Victoria, including the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island, to try the doughnuts.

“It’s like a little community that has been developing over the last 45 years, and it’s multi generational,” he said.

“Some people come and say ‘My grandparents used to bring me here, or my mum and dad used to bring me here’, and they’re bringing their own kids now,” he said.

“It’s quite beautiful to see the smiles on the kids’ faces as they’re spilling jam down their top.”

The business has two vans; one is stationed in a service lane on Dorset Rd Bayswater North on weekends, and the other at the Vermont South Bunnings, on weekends and Thursdays.
