A P-PLATER driving at almost double the speed limit in Roxburgh Park was among hundreds of offenders nabbed by police during its Operation Scoreboard blitz.

The driver’s car was impounded and he faces a one-year license suspension after being caught speeding at a whopping 107km/h in a 60km/h zone along Donald Cameron Drive.

The incident was among 1028 road offences detected police in Hume, Moonee Valley and Moreland across North West Metro Police Division 4 — the highest number recorded during the AFL Grand Final weekend.

Fawkner Highway Patrol Sergeant Calvin Cannon said while he was disappointed by the display of bad behaviour on the roads, he was pleased the police had nabbed such a high number of offenders.

“We run on the principle that if you do something wrong in our division, you run a very high risk of getting caught,” he said.

“We just about doubled the number of offences than anywhere in the state.”

North West Metro Police Division 4 had the highest commitment of police officers to the operation statewide, with 1774 hours dedicated to monitoring roads in Melbourne’s north west.

Hume uniform police operating out of Craigieburn, Broadmeadows and Sunbury stations detected 113 offences in total.

Of those, they caught 10 drink or drug drivers, five disqualified drivers and eight unlicensed drivers.

Two drivers were detected using a mobile phone at the wheel, while five were nabbed for not wearing seatbelts.

Hume CIU Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Gipp said police were cracking down on bad behaviour on roads in Melbourne’s north west following an increase in offences across the division.

“Speeding is the main issue, but there’s also been a rise in theft of numberplates,” he said.

“Stolen cars can be used in more serious offences.”

Det Sen Sgt Gipp urged road users to remove any valuables before locking their cars, and to never leave a vehicle running with the keys in the ignition at any stage.

The entire police division, which includes Hume, Moonee Valley and Moreland uniform police and highway patrols, conducted over 6000 preliminary breath tests during Operation Scoreboard — the fifth highest number in the state.

“As a result of our efforts, road trauma was substantially reduced over the long weekend,” Sgt Cannon said.

“That’s not just serious injuries or fatalities, but also minor collisions too.”

All road users were targeted during the operation, including truck drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said the State Government was boosting police numbers to record levels in an effort to curb deaths on our roads.

“One death on our roads is one too many,” he said.
