A Coolaroo man who carelessly flicked a lit cigarette butt from his car window has been slammed with a hefty fine.
A passer-by saw the butt tossed from a black hatchback on Princes St in Carlton shortly after 8pm on Christmas Day last year. They reported details of the incident to the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA).
The EPA issued the man with a $634 fine, but he took the matter to court. But when the man failed to appear in court he was hit with an additional $1018.95 fine to cover the EPA’s legal costs.
EPA executive director Paul Stacchino said cigarette butts were the most common items of litter.
“EPA issues approximately 12,000 litter fines a year and three quarters of those fines involve cigarette butts,” he said. To make a pollution report contact the EPA’s hotline on 1300 372 842. Reports must include the location and time of the incident.
