Dad of 25-year-old woman jailed for ice offences, pledges every cent on bail

A DESPERATE Roxburgh Park father has told a court he would spend his entire $2000 savings to bail his ice-addicted daughter out of jail, adding he and his wife had “tried and tried and tried” to help her.

True Crime Australia: A murder in the suburbs

A DESPERATE Roxburgh Park father has offered to spend every last cent he has in a final bid to save his ice-addicted daughter.

His 25-year-old daughter, which the Leader has chosen not to name, appeared in custody via video link at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where she applied for bail after spending 31 days in custody.

She has been charged with a string of offences related to theft, reckless driving, trespassing and drug possession.

Her father told the court his daughter had started using drugs as a “social thing” in the company of “bad friends”, but her addiction quickly escalated.

“I can’t take it anymore … her mother and I have tried and tried and tried,” he said.

“I’m struggling to make ends meet, I only have $2000 in the bank but I’m willing to give that for her bail.”

His wife added she used to sleep in the lounge room to catch her daughter sneaking out at night.

“We’ve all had bad friends, but we’ve also got choices in life,” she said to her daughter, who appeared to be crying via video link.

“You have a home — not just a house — and you have people who love you.”

Senior Constable Bjorn Kaandorp told the court the woman had remained in custody since her most recent alleged offending in the early hours of Friday August 24, when neighbours on Queens Pde in Fawkner reported a woman tampering with letterboxes.

Police found her with a spanner in hand and a bunch of letters.

After allegedly falsely stating her sister’s name and address, she was arrested and taken into custody where police discovered she was the subject of several outstanding charges dating back to 2016, involving reckless driving, driving without a valid licence, trespassing, and possession of cannabis and methylamphetamine.

Sen Const Kaandorp argued she should not be granted bail because she had failed to appear in court on “multiple occasions” in the past, continued to drive while suspended and often left her father’s house for months at a time.

“Her drug use may contribute to her going AWOL,” he told the court.

Defence counsel Manny Brennan said she was “dependent on the drug ice” and that it was her first time in custody.

The woman promised Magistrate Peter Dunn she would stay off drugs if he granted her bail application.

“I’ve realised the impact of drugs in my life and I’m going to pay for it for a really long time,” she said, sobbing.

“I never saw my life going down this path, I never saw myself in a prison … I had goals.

“It’s made me realise how much I’ve hurt my family and I want to prove to myself and my family that I can do it.”

Magistrate Peter Dunn said he acknowledged the strong support of her family.

“A parent’s love is unconditional,” he told the court.

“If you want to keep using drugs, you’ll be spending your time in prison.

“Some people don’t give up until they’re in their 40s — if they’re still alive.”

Magistrate Dunn granted her bail application on strict conditions, forcing her to live with her father, refrain from driving and adhere to a 9pm to 7am curfew.

She must also submit to drug testing on police request and engage in an intensive drugs and alcohol program.
