Construction has started on the first hotel to be built at Melbourne Airport in almost 20 years.

The first sod has been turned on the $163 million dual-branded 464-room hotel to be located next to Terminal 4 in a new precinct called The Hive.

The Novotel and ibis Styles’ branded accommodation will deliver accommodation of up to four stars and be a huge jobs boost for the Hume when completed in mid-2021.

About 450 jobs will also be created during construction.

“It provides another evolution in amenity for this precinct because we’re now up to 20,000 people coming here everyday to work,” Mr Horton said.

“If you don’t have access to the terminals and want to go to a restaurant, bar, use a gym or have a place to sit in for half a day, we just don’t have that amenity and you’re a long way from it in Tullamarine.”

He said travellers would start to see the presence of the 10-storey hotel — the first to be built at Melbourne Airport since 2002 — by Christmas.

Mr Horton said the new accommodation would be built directly opposite where a fifth terminal was likely to go.

The hotel will also include conference rooms, pool, gym, cafe, bar and restaurant facilities.

“We feel confident the 464-rooms that we’ll build across those two brands will see us right for the next 20 years,” he said.

Mr Horton said he expected rooms to be priced higher than the airport’s existing ibis budget hotel and lower than the Park Royal.

It’s expected there would be no traffic impact on the airport’s day-to-day operations or travellers during construction.

Accor Pacific chief operating officer Simon McGrath said he was confident the hotel would become a new destination in itself for passengers.

Construction firm Built will deliver the project.

The Hive precinct will also feature a childcare facility and office space ranging from 1000 to 10,000sq m.
