Police catch Roxburgh Park teen driving without a licence

An unlicensed teenager due to sit his learner’s permit test the next day was one of 82 drivers busted across Hume during a National Day of Action aimed at reducing road trauma.

An unlicensed teenager due to sit his learner’s permit test the next day was taught a valuable lesson after he was caught driving by police.

The 17-year-old Roxburgh Park boy was one of 82 drivers busted breaking the road rules across Hume during a National Day of Action on Tuesday.

Fawkner Highway Patrol Senior Constable Dwayne Sharam said the boy was picked up driving a 4WD along Roxburgh Park Drive without a licence just after 7pm.

“Inquiries revealed the (boy) had never held a licence and was intending to obtain his learner’s permit the following day,” he said.

The teen’s car was impounded and he could be prevented from getting his L’s for a certain period of time.

Acting Sergeant Jason Lane said mobile phone use behind the wheel continued to be a major problem, with motorists not getting the message that it was just as unacceptable as speeding and drink driving.

He said 35 offences alone were detected on Sydney Rd across Hume and Moreland, with one driver even caught watching a video.

Sgt Lane said highway patrol officers “hunted in packs” during a strong 24-hour presence, which focused on roadside drug and breath tests and major routes such as the Calder, Tullamarine and Hume freeways and Bulla Rd.

The 82 offences dished out in Hume included a drink driver, an unlicensed driver, a disqualified driver, 27 speeding tickets, 40 disobeying traffic control infringements, five seatbelt offences, four phone use infringements, two unregistered vehicles and an impound.

A 30-year-old driver caught travelling at more than 50km/h above the limit was one of the motorists caught speeding when police clocked him at 134km/h on Keilor Park Drive at 10.30pm.

Sgt Lane said officers were now gearing up for their next blitz — Operation Argus from September 5-8 and Operation Scoreboard across the AFL grand final weekend.

“We’re hoping that motorists take heed of the messages, start obeying the law and pay attention to the road,” he said.

Across Victoria 2672 traffic offences were detected, including 1014 for speeding and 255 for phone use.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said he was pleased there were no deaths on a day aimed at reducing road trauma.
