Victoria Police dog Rocky plays crucial role in five arrests in Melbourne’s northern suburbs

A well-earned rest and a nice bone is on the cards for Rocky the police dog after he helped secure five arrests across Melbourne’s north on the weekend. Find out how the cunning canine got the job done.

Rocky the police dog will be enjoying some well-earned rest after a prolific weekend that saw him play a crucial role in five arrests across Melbourne’s north.

The cunning canine helped police track down four people who ran from an allegedly stolen car in Greenvale in the early hours of Saturday morning before he backed up about 12 hours later when he helped find a man in a Mickleham paddock.

Two women and two men have been charged following the Greenvale pursuit, with two expected to face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court later today.

The group were allegedly driving a blue Holden Commodore erratically and at high speeds before evading police near Pascoe Vale Rd in Glenroy about 3.20am on August 24.

The quartet then allegedly led police, including the air wing, on a dangerous high speed chase through Glenroy, Coburg and Meadow Heights until they stopped in Catterick Court, Greenvale just before 4.30am and ran from the car.

Leading Senior Constable Melissa Seach said all four people were arrested with the assistance of Rocky and the dog squad a short time later.

One woman suffered a bite on the arm and was taken to hospital under police guard with minor injuries.

An 18-year-old Meadow Heights man was remanded to front court on Monday charged with theft of a car, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving while being pursued by police, failing to stop for police and committing an offence while on bail.

A 20-year-old Meadow Heights woman was also remanded to face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with theft of a motor vehicle and committing an offence while on bail.

A 20-year-old Glenroy woman has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and bailed to appear at the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on October 31.

A Meadow Heights man, 20, will also face the same court that day charged with car theft.

Rocky was again in action on Sunday when a man allegedly crashed a stolen Holden Captiva into barriers in the Hume Freeway and ran away about 3am.

The police dog then led police to the alleged driver who was found hiding in paddock close to the crash site near Donnybrook Rd.

The 47-year-old Wallan man remains in custody and is assisting police.
