A suspect wanted for allegedly hitting a police officer with a stolen car has been mauled by a police dog and tasered during a major police operation in Melbourne’s southeast.
A 26-year-old, of no fixed address, was arrested by Special Operations Group officers on a busy Mulgrave road about 10.15am.
He resisted arrest and was tasered to the ground. He was also bitten by a police dog.
The dramatic arrest unfolded in front of shocked onlookers.
A witness told the Herald Sun police were chasing a man when a smash occurred.
“He was pulled out of a car with a taser, right in front of the Woolworths distribution centre warehouse,” said the witness.
It relates to an incident in Mont Albert on August 13, where a police officer was struck with a stolen BMW sedan.
It is alleged the BMW hit two police cars before striking a male leading senior constable in the leg before speeding off.
The officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
A 21-year-old Forest Hill man was arrested several days later.
Police at the time advised they were actively pursuing three other offenders.
One witness said she saw the arrest unfold.
“I saw it all unravel here,” she said.
“I saw eight unmarked vehicles, SOGGY (Special Operations Group) guys, guys in army gear with their guns and all that.
“There was a guy on the ground.
“First paramedics arrived and then the MICA unit arrived and then he was straight off down Wellington Road to hospital.
“It was exciting, it was like ‘what’s going on here.’ I was concerned, I just thought it was an accident.”
Another witness of today’s arrest told the Herald Sun blood had been left at the scene.
The 26-year-old suspect has been taken to hospital under police guard. He is expected to undergo treatment for injuries sustained in the arrest.
Police remained on scene in Mulgrave searching an orange Subaru WRX, which has since been towed away.
Firefighters arrived to hose down the road.
