NEWHAVEN
The iconic old Dutchie’s restaurant in Newhaven is set to become a bakery.
Island Pies Bakery will relocate to the 1 Forrest Ave property after the site was bought for $1.2 million at the start of the year.
Owners Emma and Dara Loutold The Bass Coast News they were excited about the new venture.
“We are looking forward to it,” they said.
“We finished the lease in our old shop and it appears that the old Dutchie's is a better location.”
Emma and Dara, who have owned Island Pies Bakery for three years, said their family helped buy the former retro-styled diner.
It went on sale in 2018 for the first time in 50 years after Dutchie's closed more than a decade ago.
Island Pies Bakery is set to open in June.
GRANTVILLE
The waterline community has been waiting for more than a decade for a supermarket to open and now a Bass Coast man is delivering the goods and building a grocer.
The Grantville Grocer is set to open at the old Mitre 10 building on Bass Hwy.
Owner James McConvill said he was pleased to see his vision come to life.
“There’s really nothing that brings Grantville all together where you can get everything in the one spot,” he said.
“I’m really trying to fill a gap that the town needs.”
The empty building will be transformed into a multi-use site, selling local produce including fruit and vegetables.
There will also be a cafe, restaurant and drive-through liquor store.
The Grantville Grocer will open in late July.
KILCUNDA
A new shopping hub called The Sticks is set to open in Kilcunda this year.
The 3537 Bass Highway development will be home to six retail pods and large gathering spaces featuring undercover outdoor seating.
Manager Anthony Russo said it was an exciting time for him and the other local business partners.
“We want to try and create a space where you want to gather,” Mr Russo said.
“The hub will be community based and support local businesses and people.”
The new development will sit next to the popular Kilcunda General Store.
SAN REMO
A new restaurant is set to open in San Remo, adding to the thriving shopping precinct in the small coastal town.
Bass Coast Shire councillors approved the 109 Marine Parade planning application at an April 21 meeting.
The plans include altercations and additions to the existing building, which was the former Lost Fox Vintage Collectables.
The restaurant will cater for 70 people and have a covered dining area at the front of the building.
While 14 objectors were concerned about limited carparking, a traffic assessment has since confirmed there will be enough spaces.
Details have not been revealed about the food the restaurant will sell.
