Melbourne Country Week is finished for another year.
Here’s how the grand final action played out.
The Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association has claimed the 2025 Melbourne Country Week title.
They prevailed by four wickets against Sale Maffra in the Provincial Division grand final on Friday afternoon in an absorbing run chase.
The Gippsland based side had posted 254 all out after being sent into bat as Max Welsh gave his side a platform to defend with 72 runs off 69 balls.
Freddie Fallows (45 off 30) and Anthony Scott (43 off 52) also provided valuable runs throughout the innings.
It was a combined bowling effort from the Ferntree Gully outfit as Daniel O’Shea claimed 3-44 off nine overs.
Josh Priestley played a key role in the run chase finishing unbeaten on 57 off 59 as skipper Nathan Walsh set up the innings with a brilliant 67 off 78.
The Division 2 decider went down to the wire with Ballarat claiming the win over Mornington Peninsula with just a couple of balls to spare, chasing 268.
Ballarat was willed across the line by their lower order. Matthew Aikman was the hero after hitting the fourth ball of the last ball to the fence for six.
Earlier, Akshay Ballal had hit 62 off 44 after coming in at four while captain Heath Pyke showed his class with 35 off 58.
Mornington Peninsula was all out for 267 as opener Aiden McKenna gave his side a strong platform with 79 off 90 balls.
Matt Prosser ensured a bigger score on the board with a quickfire 61 off 41 balls with Fraser Hunt’s 3-54 making him the pick of the bowlers.
The Division 3 final saw Sunraysia crush the Bellarine Peninsula by 134 runs.
The team from the state’s northwest posted 8-303 from its 50 overs as Luke Stanbrook showed off his class with a brilliant century, finishing on 149 off 130 including 18 boundaries and three 6s.
He found plenty of support from Riley Jobson and Adam Thomson who soaked up the pressure and allowed their teammate to play freely.
BPCA captain Daniel Maclean took three wickets for his side.
Jasper Presswell was the star of stopping the BPCA’s run chase before it even got going as he took 5-38 including the wickets of openers Clay Mulgrew and Simon Umbers.
Zac Jones (40 off 27) and Shane Murdoch (35 off 61) provided some middle order resistance but in the end it wasn’t enough for their side.
THURSDAY REVIEW
PROVINCIAL DIVISION
The Geelong Cricket Association’s Melbourne Country Week title defence has come to an end.
After prevailing through the pool stage unbeaten, the GCA came unstuck against the Sale Maffra Cricket Association on Thursday.
Electing to bowl, the GCA were only able to restrict their opponents to Gippsland to 7-274 from their 50 overs in hot and windy conditions at Port Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Anthony Scott and Max Welsh were able to lead the way with the bat for Sale Mafra after both posting half-centuries at more than a run a ball.
Dale Kerr was the pick of the bowlers with 3-52 with Bailey Sykey (2-31) the only other multiple wicket taker.
In the run chase, Geelong was eventually all out for 122 after enduring a horror start to the innings.
They fell to 3-29 when opener Nick Butters was dismissed for 22 off 16 with Rob Smith (0) and Greg Willows (1) dismissed early.
Phil Visser offered some resistance in the middle order with 40 off 41 but struggled to find support as wickets started to fall quickly.
Ronnie McKenna (18 off 32) and Noah Guida (12 off 15) provided some resistance in the lower but were unable to pull their side out of trouble.
Ferntree Gully also qualified for the decider after prevailing by 53 runs against Casey Cardinia.
They posted 4-299 behind a brilliant century from skipper Nathan Walsh (122no off 98) who hit six boundaries and four 6s.
Josh Priestley was also a strong performer with 78 off 84.
Casey Cardinia was all out for 243 as Darcy Whitten and Daniel O’Shea led the way with three wickets each.
Callum O’Hare and Tobias Van der heever both hit half-centuries in the run chase.
DIVISION 2
Teen sensation Sam Field has done it again, turning in another jaw-dropping performance at Melbourne Country Week.
On the back of his match-winning 59no and 4-18 for Mornington Peninsula on Wednesday, 15-year-old Field fronted up on Thursday and took 6-32 with his off-spinners to set up victory over Ballarat.
It’s been a golden week for the kid from Flinders.
Ballarat was motoring along at 0-69 off 10 overs when Field was brought on to bowl and, bang, he struck with his first delivery.
He proceeded to rip through the Ballarat top order and when he took his sixth wicket, Ballarat had slumped to 7-122.
Field, who made his First XI debut for Flinders at 12, has had a Kookaburra sponsorship deal since he was eight.
Mornington Peninsula star Matt Prosser described Field as “a special talent” with a big future.
“We’re not going to see much of him in the Purples because he’s going to go onto bigger and better things,” he said.
“But just to have him around is pretty cool.”
Prosser was also outstanding as Mornington Peninsula remained undefeated in Division 2 with a four-wicket win. Prosser made 87 not out off 86 balls (with 8 fours, 2 sixes) as the Purples chased down Ballarat’s 201 with 12 overs to go, finishing 6-203.
Jean-Luc Talbot impressed with 43 before he was run out after a mix-up. Harley Peace-Stirling made 29.
Mornington Peninsula will meet Ballarat again in Friday’s final.
The Bellarine Peninsula CA picked up its third win of the competition after overcoming Gisborne and District by five wickets at Aberfeldie Park in Melbourne’s northwest.
A dominant bowling display which included four wickets to Dane Wise-Graham saw the BPCA have their opponents all out for 119 inside 32 overs.
Vice-captain Shane Murdoch led the run chase which was patient with the BPCA getting across the line inside 43 overs.
Murdoch finished with 48 not out off 93 balls.
DAY THREE WRAP
Geelong made it three wins from three in the Provincial Division after a dominant seven-wicket win over Casey Cardinia. Tobias Van den heever hit 67 runs off 81 balls to guide Casey Cardinia to all out for 171 with Nick Butters the pick of the bowlers at 3-31 off 10. Greg Willows showed his class in the run chase with a 74 not out to lead Geelong home.
Ferntree Gully ensured its perfect record in Pool B with a six-wicket win over Sale Maffra. Chandima Abeykoon and Daniel O’Shea dominated with the ball, taking three wickets each as Sale was all out for 152. Josh Priestley’s unbeaten 49 proved key in the run chase.
Warrnambool claimed its first win of the competition after overcoming Bairnsdale by four wickets. Bairnsdale posted 189 all out as Jayanga Peiris top scored with 38 as Mark Murphy claimed 3-28. Jack Burnham led the run chase with an impressive 90 off 98.

Batting first, Bendigo was all out for 173 as Matthew Wilkinson top scored with 46 while Ethan Lamers and Ron Abeysinghe took three wickets each. Mitchell Clark led the Gippsland competition across the line with a patient 62 not out.
In Division 2, Sunraysia posted a massive win over Hamilton as Gol Gol star Adam Thomson scored a blazing century. Thomson finished with an unbeaten 131 off 106 balls including 11 boundaries and eight 6s to led his side to 8-331 as Liam Naylor (72 off 80) hit a half-century. Hamilton gave their best in the run chase but ultimately fell short as Shanaka Silva and Mitch Arnold scored half-centuries.
Gisborne and District picked up their second win of the competition with a six-wicket win over Kingston-Hawthorn. The Hawks posted 107 all out as Riley Vernon tore through the batting line-up with 3-19 off seven while Aaron Paterson and Harry Sheahan chipped in with two wickets each. The run chase was completed in just 15.4 overs.
Matthew Aikman continued his brilliant week with the ball for Ballarat after taking 3-28 as his side romped to a massive win over South West, to make it three from three. South West was all out for 110 as Matthew Boyle top scored with 28. Ballarat was just one down in the chase as Akila Lakshan and Sajith Dissanayaka finished unbeaten on 44 and 33 respectively.
Mornington Peninsula continued its dominant tournament with a 149-run thumping of Maryborough District as teenage sensation Sam Field, 15, showed off his class. Half-centuries from Matt Prosser (62 not out), Field (59), Sam Fowler and Kierran Voelk (both 50) powered Mornington to 4-263. Field then led the way with the ball taking 4-18 to lead his side to a big win.

They successfully chased down its target as Shane Murdoch (76) and Ben Norgrove (46) led the way. The team from the state’s northeast posted 9-193 as Cooper Thomason top scored with 37.
