Grantville locals have been waiting for years for a supermarket in their small waterline town and now a Bass Coast local is delivering the goods and opening a grocer.

The Grantville Grocer is set to open at the old Mitre 10 building on Bass Highway.

Owner James McConvill told The Bass Coast News he is excited to see his vision come to life.

“There’s really nothing that brings Grantville all together where you can get everything in the one spot,” he said.

“I’m really trying to fill a gap that the town needs.”

The empty building will be transformed into a multi-use site, selling local produce including fruit and vegetables.

There will also be a cafe and beer garden which will create employment opportunities for 20 to 30 locals.

Mr McConvill said there have been more than 200 enquiries within the last two weeks.

“The aim is to provide everything for them so if they want to stay in Grantville they have that option,” Mr McConvill said.

“There will be an emphasis on what the locals want.”

In December, the Bass Coast Shire Council also fully supported the proposed development of a supermarket in Grantville.

The 1531-1545 Bass Highway land will include a cafe, retail space, medical centre, pharmacy and service station.

The Corinella resident and lawyer is a “little bit” worried about the competition if a supermarket does open but he is confident his grocer will be a hit.

Mr McConvill worked at the old general store in Grantville in the 90s so he knows “a thing or two” about grocers.

His parents also owned the general store in Corinella for a couple of years.

The Grantville Grocer is set to open at the end of March, just time for the Easter holidays.
