Grantville locals are one step closer to getting a long-awaited supermarket in their small Bass Coast town.
A proposed development on 1531-1545 Bass Highway, which includes a supermarket, cafe, retail spaces, medical centre, pharmacy and service station, got full support from Bass Coast Shire councillors on Wednesday.
The plan also includes about 17 new residential lots of 600sq m and 160 carparking spaces.
Cr Claire Le Serve said it had been a long time coming.
“Good on the community for getting behind it,” she said.
“I think it will be a great building block for Grantville to take that next step and be that northern entrance into Bass Coast.”
Cr Le Serve said it was important for the community to know “this is a development plan not the planning permit”.
“It gives [the community] an indication of what is coming,” she said.
“We have all acknowledged that Grantville is a great place and this will help build on that tradition.”
Cr Bruce Kent also said the community must remember this is the first step.
“As a council we have to assist those private enterprises who are investing their millions of dollars out of their own pocket to produce supermarkets, fuel stations and land,” Cr Kent said.
“It’s not our money, it’s their money and they are taking the chance so the community must get together and support them.”
Cr Halstead said she was “excited for the community” which had “been desperate” for the development.
