A new hub featuring shops and community spaces is set to open in the small coastal town of Kilcunda this year.
The 3537 Bass Highway development, known as The Sticks, will be home to six retail pods and large gathering spaces featuring undercover outdoor seating.
The Sticks manager Anthony Russo told The Bass Coast News it was an exciting time for him and the other local business partners.
“We want to try and create a space where you want to gather,” Mr Russo said.
“The hub will be community based and support local businesses and people.”
The new development will sit next to the popular Kilcunda General Store.
Local produce shop Udder and Hoe that is currently behind the Kilcunda General Store will move to the front space of The Sticks.
“We are very conscious of trying to build on that unique seaside community feeling,” Mr Russo said.
“There is obviously a need for this.”
Mr Russo said documentation and engineering was underway for the design.
He said there had been significant interest in the retail spaces from businesses including clothing, hiking gear, surfing gear, furniture stores and homeware shops.
“It’s still in the early stages but we would like to try and select various types of people to accommodate the retail areas to give it diversity,” Mr Russo said.
Kilcunda currently has around 400 residents with the town popular for holiday-makers due to the ocean views of the Bass Strait.
The Sticks is due to open at the end of the year.
