Emergency services called to crash involving V/Line train and truck on Princes Hwy in Kilmany, about 100 passengers evacuated

A truck and a train — with about 100 passengers on board who had to evacuate — have collided in the state’s east, leaving people having to catch buses as an alternative.

A truck and a train — with about 100 passengers passengers on board — have collided in Gippsland, causing long delays.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the Princes Hwy at Kilmany just after 10am on Tuesday.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a truck towing an excavator on a trailer was struck by an oncoming V-line passenger train at 10.10am.

It’s understood the truck driver, train driver and the passengers on board were either uninjured or sustained minor injuries.

Paramedics assessed five people on scene and no one was hospitalised.

A CFA spokesperson said crews arrived to find fuel leaking from the train and reports of a person trapped in the wreckage.

“Three CFA vehicles are currently responding, one from Rosedale and the others from Sale, alongside SES,” the spokesperson said.

Volunteer SES and CFA crews later confirmed no one was trapped.

Delays are expected for motorists in both directions between Kilmany and Fulham, and buses are replacing trains between Traralgon and Bairnsdale for several hours.

A V/Line spokesperson said they would work with authorities on the investigation.

“We thank passengers for their patience while we work to get them to their destination as quickly and safely as possible following the incident at a crossing near Kilmany,” the spokesperson said.

“Safety is our priority and we will work with the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.”

The cause of the incident is yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.
