Could Hugh Jackman be the AFL’s secret Grand Final entertainment weapon?
The Australian superstar is the latest in an increasingly long line of names rumoured to be performing at the MCG on September 28.
This year’s entertainment is due to be officially confirmed this week, however sources suggest there’s been difficulty in securing the right performers this year, hence the delayed announcement.
American band One Republic have already been locked in for the NRL Grand Final, taking place on October 6.
However the late start for the NRL’s big game is more enticing for international acts, who can use full lighting and production by playing after dark.
Jackman, a Port Adelaide fan, would silence critics complaining about imported talent being paid to play at the Grand Final.
Last year’s headliner, Jimmy Barnes, delivered meat and potatoes Oz rock.
However that rules out getting his band Cold Chisel this year. Midnight Oil are also believed to have been approached, as well as Daryl Braithwaite and John Farnham as no-brainer Aussie icon crowd pleasing headline acts.
The local leg of Jackman’s sell out The Man The Music The Show tour ends in Brisbane tonight. He has two shows in Auckland — September 6 and 7 — and is then on a break until the final leg of tour kicks off again in Boston on October 1.
That leaves a tight window of availability for the global superstar if the price is right.

SEVEN OF THE WORST GRAND FINAL ACTS
Jackman’s tour features a string of Peter Allen classics including I Still Call Australia Home and Tenterfield Saddler, and even a tap dance version of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck that could work for the Grand Final, as well as his songs from The Greatest Showman.
Jackman has said singing the National Anthem at the MCG for the Bledisloe Cup in 1997 was one of the most terrifying moments of his career.
As with previous years, younger names have also been linked to the event — chart toppers Dean Lewis and Tones And I, currently at No. 1 with her single Dance Monkey.
