Coombabah House Fire

A neighbour has jumped a fence to help a single mum and two kids escape their burning home.

The blaze caused the Gooding Drive, Coombabah home’s roof to collapse and left a boy being rushed to hospital with minor injuries to his ankle.

Nathan Wall told the Bulletin he smelt something strange about 6.30pm on Saturday and looked over the fence to see smoke billowing from his neighbours’ property.

“I had to jump the fence because the gates were locked,” he said.

Mr Wall said he saw the mum and kids under an awning and then helped them get over the fence into his own backyard and to safety.

“I tried to use their hose but there was just no point – it was too …,” he said,

Mr Wall said he then returned home and started to wet down his own home.

It took four fire trucks until about 8pm to get the blaze under control.

Mr Wall said his neighbours had been taken to hospital with the young boy but had not returned to the home.

“They’ve got nothing to come back to,” he said.

A high fences hides a majority of the home from view from the street but extensive damage to the roof can be seen.

There is also a smell on the street.

On Sunday morning neighbours out on their morning walk were spotted surveying the damage.

The cause of the blaze is not known.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the fire was not considered to be suspicious.

The fire comes at the end of a busy week for fire crews who have been called to a number on incidents.

On Monday night an emergency area was declared after a blaze broke out in a Molendinar scrap metal yard, closing the area for about two hours.

The cause of that blaze is yet to be determined.

The following night a Southport tobacconist suffered “significant damage” after a blaze started in the cupboard. The cause of that fire is also unknown.

On Saturday, April 1 would be thieves broke into a Runaway Bay restaurant and started a blaze after attempts to steal from the neighbouring tobacconist were unsuccessful.

Investigators are also yet to determine the cause of that fire.
