Some would-be crooks have had their attempts to start a fire and steal some cigarettes thwarted in a baffling series of events.
The would-be thieves left empty-handed after they used a Lae Drive, Runaway Bay Indian Restaurant to attempt to break into the neighbouring tobacco shop on Saturday night.
The shop is new and is still undergoing a fit out.
Nothing was taken.
As they were leaving the would-be thieves attempted to set fire to Bay Leaf Indian Gourmet.
Their attempts were so poor the blaze did not take.
Police were called to the restaurant just before midday on Sunday when the owner noticed the break-in.
On Monday morning a sign was outside the restaurant stating what had happened.
“Unfortunately we had to close due to a fire accident done by someone purposely,” the sign said.
“We will however be back shortly.
“Thank you for your understanding.”
Police are investigating.
