A Gold Coast tradie whose gluteal artery was severed after he was stabbed on a night out at Surfers Paradise has told his attacker’s sentencing hearing the “trust I had in the world has been shattered”.

Victorian pair Ngor Ngor, 24, and Manyang Manyang, 22, appeared in Southport District Court on Friday.

Ngor pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and driving unlicensed, while Manyang pleaded guilty to being an accessory to grievous bodily harm after the fact.

The offences were committed in the early hours of July 14 last year.

Crown prosecutor Keith Nicholson told the court the stabbing occurred on Orchid Ave at about 2.30am on the night in question.

Manyang was waiting near a nightclub for Ngor to give them a lift in his vehicle when the complainant, Palm Beach concreter Daniel Condon, who was aged 20 at the time, glanced in Manyang’s direction as he and a female friend walked past.

Manyang told Mr Condon to “f--- off” and the pair became involved in a verbal altercation, which progressed to physical when they began swinging punches, Mr Nicholson told the court.

Several women present were attempting to break up the fight when Ngor arrived.

Ngor was beckoned over by one of the women, who shouted at him for help in breaking up the fight.

He exited his vehicle, armed with a kitchen knife with a 20cm blade, and took a swing at Mr Condon.

The first missed, but the second struck Mr Condon, who by this point was on the ground, in his buttocks. It caused a 15cm laceration and severed his gluteal artery.

Mr Condon was “lying facedown in a pool of blood” when emergency services arrived and he became “unresponsive” after entering haemorrhagic shock while being transported to hospital via ambulance, Mr Nicholson said.

Meanwhile, Ngor and Manyang fled the scene, making it as far as Molendinar before Ngor crashed the vehicle.

CCTV cameras captured Manyang assisting Ngor to clean the knife, before Ngor disposed of it in nearby bushland, the court was told.

Manyang was arrested at the scene of the crash and Ngor the following day, July 15.

Manyang, who had a limited criminal history, was granted bail but Ngor, who had a far more serious history – he breached a Victorian community corrections order by the current offending – was remanded in custody.

Mr Condon was in a coma until July 18 and was moved from the ICU to the acute trauma ward on July 22, the court heard.

He was discharged on August 1, but readmitted on August 12 due to ongoing pain and swelling.

Mr Condon was not ultimately discharged until October 16 after undergoing three further procedures.

Mr Nicholson told the court Mr Condon still has no feeling in his left foot and must wear a brace to walk as he suffers from ‘foot drop’.

This has meant he has been unable to return to his trade, and he’s also had to sell his manual vehicle.

He may require additional surgery in future.

In a victim impact statement read to the court by Mr Nicholson, Mr Condon said every day of his ongoing recovery has been filled with “pain, fear, and uncertainty”.

“The loss of my career, my independence, and my sense of safety in the world is something I am forced to deal with every day,” he said.

“The trust I had in the world has been shattered.

“I am determined to not let this define me, but I am forever marked by it.”

He was particularly bereft at the loss of his career, he added.

His mother, in her statement, said she had been forced to give up her job as a teacher in order to be there for her son, while Mr Condon’s father said he endures sleepless nights because he is “terrified of what I will dream when I close my eyes”.

Defence counsel Patrick Wilson, representing Ngor, told the court his client was confronted with an “extraordinary” scene when he pulled up in his vehicle and saw his friend Manyang punching on.

He characterised the offending as a “grossly excessive response in defence of another”.

Defence counsel Anna Cappellano, representing Manyang, said her client’s assistance in dealing with the bloodied knife was brief, unsophisticated, and ineffective.

Ngor was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, with parole eligibility set at January 14, 2027, taking into account the year he had already spent on remand.

Manyang was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for an operational period of 18 months.
