Damien Mitchelmore, AFLQ Schools and Growth Manager, was delighted with the success of the Schools Cup Primary Divisions this season.
“2020 has been a challenging year (due to COVID-19 disruptions), but to have had 2500 kids play in the revised competition across the state is just fantastic,’’ he said.

The SEQ Invitational for secondary age students was formed following the cancellation of AFLQ Schools of Excellence competition in south east Queensland.
“There has been great support from participating schools and following on from the four gala days last month which saw nearly 750 students participate, we are set for some great football this weekend.
“It has been a challenging year for everyone and while we had to make the unavoidable decision to cancel the secondary divisions of the AFLQ Schools Cup, we are looking forward to this week’s event and are already planning to relaunch all divisions of the competition in 2021.’’
Teams from Palm Beach Currumbin SHS in the south to Park Ridge and Algester State Schools in the south west and across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast have qualified for the Schools Cup, including Brisbane private school St Laurence’s College.
St Laurence’s, a traditional rugby union powerhouse, will field a team which includes Cooper Hodge, the son of Hawthorn champion Luke.
College principal Chris Leadbetter said following a review of the AIC sporting program two years ago, “the Association listened to student voice and we decided to broaden our sporting options with AFL being one of the new sports adopted’’.
“The introduction of AFL into the AIC sporting association and the opportunity that exists through the pathway of the AFLQ Schools Cup is continuation of this broadening of experiences we offer at St Laurence’s College and this allows our students an opportunity to let their light shine inside and outside of the classroom.’’
Mitchelmore said AFLQ was “very grateful to have the ongoing support of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for the running of our finals fixtures at the first class Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex’’.
“We want to also thank the AFLQ School Community for their ongoing support of our competitions and programs.’’
