MORNINGSIDE v MT GRAVATT
It took overtime to split Morningside and Mt Gravatt in the under 16 boys Central Maroon grand final after the scores were locked at 9-11-65 apiece at the end of full-time.
The Vultures won 14-13-97 to 9-11-65, kicking away in the end after a dramatic game.
Mt Gravatt had a huge first period of five minute overtime, rising to a 12-11-83 to 9-11-65 advantage after kicking three majors.
It was a grand final classic, with a scurried behind from Mt Gravatt putting the side ahead with minutes to play, only and Morningside to draw level after a set shot went through for a behind.
Coach Mick Corboy was said fitness played a part in the win, with the side coming from three goals down at three quarter time to draw level, and then pull away in extra time.
“We worked on our fitness this year and it showed in the end,’’ coach Corboy said.
“They did all the right things, we talked about it all year about putting the ball in the right places and working really hard, and the boys were absolutely fantastic.’’
There was more good news for Mt Gravatt, with Vultures’ Luca Paruskevopoulos named competition player of the year and his teammate Ryan Ferris best on the ground.
SANDGATE v REDCLIFFE
It was a fantastic battle of the bayside clubs between Sandgate and Redcliffe in the under 16 boys central gold grand final.
The Tigers won 6-3-39 to 5-4-34 in a remarkable match after the Hawks finished with a wet sail.
Redcliffe made the running but Sandgate refused to throw in the towel, fighting every inch of the way.
Redcliffe led by three goals well into the fourth quarter, but two quick goals from Sandgate and then a behind took the game down to the wire.
It was a wonderful game and a grand final thriller every all the way to the full-time siren.
In arguably the acceptance speech of the weekend, Redcliffe coach Steve Jenkins played tribute to Sandgate who he said had been the benchmark side and who had given his side a high water mark to reach.
Jenkins praised his team for “buying’’ into the process.
“They believed. We had been building on our belief in our ability to match Sandgate in certain elements of their game that they are particularly good at.
“We had been clawing away across the year and as I said, credit to them.
“We knew if we got to this day it was them we would be playing against, so we had been planning for this for the last eight weeks, knowing we also had to tick every box along the way.
“It all came together and without the players all buying into it, there is no way we would have pulled it off.’’
Redcliffe led by four goals at one stage, but coach Jenkins knew a Sandgate recovery could be mounted in the final term.
“You take four goals at three quarter time if someone offered that to you,’’ he said.
“But I was not surprised when they kicked the first goal so quickly (in the fourth term).
“Again, respect to them, I was probably prepared for most situations. And I was not surprised,’’ said Jenkins, who was in his first year as coach at the club.
There was more good news for Redcliffe, with Adam Dekker being named best on ground.
CALAMVALE v BEENLEIGH
Beenleigh were the under 16 south west premiers fter beating Calamvale 8-6-54 to 6-5-41 in a cliffhanger at Yeronga.
Beenleigh received a rousing reception from supporters as they left the field, and then the boys generated a celebration like there was going to be no tomorrow.
It was a victory to savour given the quality of the opposition and from where Beenleigh had come from earlier in the season.
“We started slowly and Calamvale beat us earlier in the year,’’ said assistant coach Wayne Fogden.
“Our boys were deflated, but we have improved so much.Fogarty said he had never been associated with a group so tightly knit, while also heaping praise on coach Troy Brooke.
“He is just wonderful, like a father figure.’’
Brooke said he was proud of the strength of character the side displayed - and they needed it against outstanding opponents.
“Full credit to Calamvale. They especially tested our boys,’’ Brooke said.
He said grand final day was “always a tricky business’’ and it was great to get the result.
Beenleigh also had reason to celebrate when Ryan Grove was named player of the year and Haranui Tera best on ground.
MORNINGSIDE v MT GRAVATT
How appropriate. How utterly appropriate that SEQ AFL grand final weekend end with a thriller - Morningside 6.11.47 defeating Mt Gravatt 7.3.45
It started that way on Friday night, and along the journey across Saturday and Sunday there were amazing grand finals shared around from Beenleigh to Redcliffe.
And late today the Morningside Panthers prevailed in the under 16 Central Blue decider at Yeronga.
It was a tight, low scoring affair, with desperation from start to finish.
Morningside were out by 5-6-36 to 4-2-26 at halftime, and they inched, crept to victory in a game where behinds - let alone behinds - were like gold.
