MORNINGSIDE BLACK V SANDGATE RED
Sandgate Hawks under 12 Central Red scored a remarkable grand final win over a gallant Morningside Panthers after the match was sent into overtime.
Hawks won 8-9-57 to 7-5-53, but it took 10 minutes of extra time to find a winner after the teams were locked 45-all at fulltime.
Brock O’Sullivan broke the deadlock in overtime, and then Conor Pocock added what looked to be the match-winning goal.
But never-say-die Morningside got back to within four points again when the outstanding Benjamin Farrell kicked a goal. Farrell was best player on ground.
A huge third quarter effort from Morningside dragged the Panthers to within just two points of their rivals entering the final term.
Farrell was a go-to player for Morningside and a thriller was set up with the scores 6-4-41 to 6-3-39 in favour of Sandgate.
“It was remarkable really,’’ said Sandgate coach Ross Rodgers.
“It was an even game throughout.
“I think we got our noses in front early but to Morningside’s credit they fought back hard and made it a contest right to the end.
“We never game up. We were out-sized but we tried to play to our strengths. We were stronger at the ground level and we tried to make that our methode and I think that paid off.’’
Play started under brilliant Spring skies with Sandgate inching ahead in the under 12 Central Red grand final on Field No.2.
Georgie Mills, Jack Rogers and Michael Graham kicked three first term goals as the Hawks established a handy 3-3-21 to 1-1-7 advantage, a lead which ballooned out to 5-3-33 to 1-2-8 after Brock O’Sullivan goal.
But back Morningside came in the second term and with Farrell a focal point, reduced the margin to just 13 points before Hawks kicked away again 6-4-40 to 3-2-20 by halftime.
Meanwhile, there were joint players of the year in the competition.
Victoria Point’s Cayden Zutt and Mario Areiva of Wilston Grange were joint Players of the Year.
YERONGA BLACK VS MT GRAVATT BLUE
Ben Morison was named both best afield and under 12 Central Gold player of the year as the Devils secured a 7-9-51 to 3-2-20 grand final win this morning.
Yeronga coach Scott Stephens praised the team’s work ethic after the victory.
“We probably worked them a little bit harder than what they are used to so they had to adjust to that and get used to that,’’ Stephens said.
“In terms of today, we were not playing very well in the first half. It was probably our worst game of footie all year.
“But they turned that around and were able to put the game away.
“At the end of the day our first half was not very good, but when you play like that in the second half and it is a grand final, it does not really matter.’’
In a nice touch man of the moment Morison was watched by his grandmother.
Coach Stephens said Morison had a fantastic work ethic and could comfortably play under 16s, such was his standard of play and hard work.
“He will reach the highest levels because of how hard he works. He is focused, he is mature beyond his years,’’ the coach praised. “He will keep improving.’’
ALEXANDRA HILLS V COORPAROO
Alexandra Hills secured the under 12 Central Maroon SEQ AFL grand final over Coorparoo this afternoon.
Alexandra Hills prevailed 11-11-77 to 2-3-15 after establishing a 7-10-52 to 2-1-13 advantage entering the final term.
Capping a grand afternoon for Alex Hill was the naming of Lachlan Sparkes as both best on ground and also player of the year.
REDCLIFFE V KEDRON
The Kedron Lions under 12s were celebrating a 7-5-47 to 3-8-26 win over Redcliffe Tigers in the Central Orange division.
Clancy Nugent reported the Lions emerged from a halftime deadlock to be the better side, with best on ground and joint player of the year, Jack Woodwood, leading the way.
Coach Joel Gray said the key in the second half was being first to the ball and getting to the contest in numbers.
“It was a really hot day so whoever worked hardest and got the most numbers to the contest would win at the end of the day.”
Kedron earned the win the hard way against tough opposition in a typically tough grand final contest.
“Both teams were evenly talented and it was even at half time, then in the third quarter we managed to kick three goals and get a gap on them,’’ Gray said.
“Then in the last quarter when we were kicking into the wind we just worked hard and we were able to keep them out.”
PARK RIDGE V JINDALEE
The under 12 South West grand final late in the day was a thriller, with Park Ridge inching past Jindalee 6-3-39 to 6-1-37.
It was a tight, physical affair according to reporter Clancy Nugent who watched Jindalee storm home.
“Third-quarter we kind of went to sleep and then going into the last I thought we were going to let the game slip away but to the boys and girls credit they stuck in there and did what they needed to do,” said Pirates coach Anthony Jeffreys.
“To finish the season undefeated and win the premiership, that’s every kids dream, it is everyone’s dream isn’t it if you play football.
“It was a great effort and I couldn’t be prouder of the kids.”
For this age group, Jindalee’s Ethan Duke was named best player in the final and best player all season.
