WILSTON GRANGE WHITE V ASKPLEY CLEVELAND
Wilston Grange AFC coach Dan Brock said a heavy loss to Aspley during the home and away season was a turning point which led to today’s 7-4-46 to 2-8-20 grand final victory over the Hornets.
The Gorillas lead from start to finish and ultimately claimed the under 14 Teal title by kicking straight after Aspley generated as many scoring opportunities.
Brock said Wilston Grange started the season strongly but had a wake-up call against Aspley earlier in the season.
“We were pretty nervous coming out today,’’ he said in reference to the manner in which Aspley defeated them earlier on.
“That first loss was a bit of a wake-up call. It makes you reaccess. We changed our play a little bit and it let the boys know they have to pick their game up to win.’’
He said he was most proud of the manner in which the side came together as a group.
“I think they really understand the value of doing their part and playing the one percentagers.
“They realise the only way they are going to win is if they play together,’’ Brock said.
“That is what they did today and that is what they started doing about halfway through the season.’’
There was good news for Aspley when Brock Copeland was named competition player of the year.
The best on ground went to Gorillas’ Bailey Nicholas-Brazier.
JINDALEE BLUE V WESTS JUNIORS MAROON
The Jindalee Jags surged to a 8-7-55 to 4-4-28 win over a gutsy Wests Juniors in the Under 14 Central Gold decider early this afternoon at Yeronga.
Jags’ player Cooper Stone was named both player of the year and best on ground, one of several individual awards secured by Jindalee players this season.
“Cooper winning the league best and fairest is brilliant,’’ said coach Adrian Long.
“But we have four teams in premierships this year and four best and fairests for the club, so it has been a great year.’’
Coach Long also praised his team’s fitness and work rate and said they needed both to get over Wests who tested them on the big day.
“We have been able to run a full four quarters out,’’ Long said.
“We have not been tested a lot this year, but certanly today it was a game we were concerned about to start with. But we dug in deep, we believed in ourselves.’’
ASPLEY V NARANGBA
Clancy Nugent reports that in the under 14 Central Lime grand final, Narangba Crows 10-12-72 defeated Aspley Hornets 2-5-17.
Coach Paddy Connolly was delighted with the performance. “When you are coming into a grand final undefeated, its very nervy.
“More teams have lost grand finals after going unbeaten all year so you always have that in the back of your mind you are just hoping that the boys turn up on the day like they did all year.”
He said he was most pleased with “fight and effort all the way through’’.
“Even when we did get up a little bit we did not think we had it won.
”We stayed in the fight and just stayed in the game at all times which is more than you could have asked for.”
Player of the year and Best on Ground was Jett Hill from Narangba.
SPRINGWOOD V CALAMVALE
Springwood’s Oliver Radcliffe was named player of the year as his team claimed the under 14 South West premiership, 7-7-49 to 5-2-32 over Calamvale.
Springwood coach Paul Wessling said his team started well but struggled as Calamvale fought back strongly toward the end of each quarter.
“To our boys’ credit we had a couple of injuries but they persevered, they dug deep and they had been showing good form all year,’’ he said.
“They held true today and got rewarded for their effort which was really pleasing.”
Radcliffe was also named best on ground.
MORNINGSIDE V MT GRAVATT BLUE
MORINGSIDE v MT GRAVATT
Morningside 4-7-31 defeated Mt. Gravatt Blue 2-2-14 in a under 14 Central Blue grand final showdown late today.
Clancy Nugent reported that Panthers Baxter Ellis was both player of the year and Best on Ground
Morningside Coach Shaun Ellis praised Mt Gravatt for coming back after his side jumped them.
“It was a tight contest all day and then they got a couple of goals in the last quarter to make it very interesting. We were lucky enough to get a goal at the very end to seal it which was very pleasing.”
“To Mt. Gravatt’s credit, they got their hands on the footy. We had a lot of footy early on but the Mounties got their hands on it and started to play their type of footy, we had to respond and to our boys credit they did which was really good. It was probably a classical type grand final.”
