SPRINGWOOD v MORNINGSIDE
The Springwood AFC under 15 girls created history in the Central Maroon grand final by becoming the first female side to win a premiership at the club.
A soccered goal from Olivia Hamilton eased pressure in a cut-throat decider which lifted Springwood to its winning score of 5-3-33 to 3-2-20 over a hard working Morningside.
There was further celebration for Springwood when Dekota Baron was named Player of the Year while for Morningside, Charlotte Blacker was named Best on Ground.
Springwood coach Adrian Walker said he was proud of his team which rose from adversity.
Today’s grand finals follow a bumper 48 hours of action and caps a record breaking season for AFLQ in terms of junior participation.
“We had a lot of injuries during the year and at times struggled to field teams,’’ Walker said.
“We went through many games without a bench, we won some, we lost some but came good at the end of the year when we got our whole side back.
“I was so proud of their heart and soul and the way they dug in.
“They are the youngest side in this comp and showed their maturity in the game.’’
SANDGATE v JINDALEE
Sandgate Hawks claimed the under 15 girls premiership with a win over a gutsy Jags today.
Hawks prevailed 3-6-24 to 0-2-2, leading from start to finish to claim the title in a battle of the bayside.
Sandgate went through the season unbeaten and, after some early nerves, were able to find their groove and produce on the big day that counted most.
Coach Ben Long said the side was hardened from last year’s experience when they were elevated into Div 1, but went through a school of hard knocks after losing some matches heavily.
“We started with most of this team last year,’’ said coach Ben Long.
“We kept most of the girls together and they just improved out of sight to the extent that we were undefeated for the whole season.’’
Evie Long shone to win two awards – best on ground and player of the year.
But she shared the player of the year award with Kedron’s Ashleigh Moyle who was on hand to enjoy the moment alongside Long.
Jindalee were brave in defeat, never giving an inch and every point was hard earned by Sandgate.
MT GRAVATT v WESTS JUNIORS
The Mt Gravatt Vultures under 17 girls rebounded from last season’s grand final loss to Wests Juniors by claiming the Central Maroon premiership today at Yeronga.
Mt Gravatt won 6-10-46 to 3-2-20, leading all the way against rivals who found the energy to kick two fourth term goals, only to fall short of the Vultures.
”I am most proud of the way they came back from losing the 2019 grand final against Wests,’’ said Mt Gravatt coach Carynne Robinson.
“They really knuckled down this year wanting to learn the skills of football.
“It was great to see that girls football continues to grow and evolve.’’Robinson kept it simple on grand final day.
“I said to them you know what you have to do.
“There is nothing you need to change, just go out, play some footie and have fun and enjoy the grand final day.
“They did that and they deserved the win.’’
There were more celebrations for both Wests and Mt Gravatt when Ava Sexton (Wests) and Rose Collins (Mt Gravatt) shared the player of the year award. In addition, Mt Gravatt’s Charlotte Millen was named best on the ground.
WILSTON GRANGE v VICTORIA POINT
The Wilston Grange under 17 girls rose when it counted most - on grand final day - to beat Victoria Point 9-10-64 to 2-3-15.
The performance, spearheaded by best on ground Brooke Sheridan, iced an excellent month long build-up to grand final day.
Coach Brad Power said he was delighted with the way the girls “bandied together’’ after the disruption of the COVID-19 crisis.
“Being poremiers means the world to the girls.
“We had been building now for about four weeks and it was getting better and better.
“’Power said he was pleased to see Sheridan recognised with best on ground after she moved from Tannum Sands to the club to progress her football.
“For her to get it was spot on,’’ Power said.
