Palm Beach Currumbin State High School, Varsity State College, Mountain Creek SHS and Helensvale SHS have qualified for next month’s finals after winning at the Australia Football League Queensland (AFLQ) SEQ Invitational Gala Day senior boys competition staged at Coorparoo AFC.
It was the fourth and final day of qualifying matches at the gala carnival to see who qualified for the finals on October 16-17.
Earlier in the week the junior girls, senior boys and senior girls were contested.
The four days of games were livestreamed at www.couriermail.com.au, at the Gold Coast Bulletin and News affiliates.
Palm Beach Currumbin won three in a row against Narangba Valley SHS, Padua College and Miami SHS and finished top of pool A.
PBC coach Jason Jeffrey said he wanted to see effort, not just skill from his side, and he was satisfied with what he saw.
“We have a very talented team, but we don’t want to win games of football on talent.
“We want to win games around effort and structures as well and they showed that today,’’ Jeffrey said.
“We look forward to the next four weeks training in preparation to Maroochydore (finals, October 16-17).’’
Helensvale SHS coach Ben Tindall was pleased with what he saw from his squad.
“I thought the best thing was that they played to a team structure,’’ Tindall said.
“They looked after each other and were unselfish. That was the key today.
“We are not an overly big side, so the way they move the ball, go through the hands first and lower their eyes for the short kicks instead of bombing it long worked to our advantage.’’
Varsity State College coach Simon Foat was relieved to get through to the finals after stiff opposition from Mountain Creek SHS, winning 2-2-14 to 1--0-6.
“It was a really tough game,’’ Foat said.
“We knew Mountain Creek would be very tough and it was a really hard fought game.’’But he said it was a team performance which got the side through.” They linked up really well,’’ he said.
Mountain Creek SHS then bounced back from that loss and won its finals’ qualifying match in a play-off with Park Ridge SHS in the final game of the day, 4-3-27 to 2-2-14. (See report below).

Finals’ qualifying match
Mountain Creek SHS v Park Ridge SHS
Mountain Creek got the jump on their rivals to kick two first half goals, but Park Ridge kicked the first major of the second half to reduce the margin to just 13-7.
It was a hard fought clash to see who joined Varsity, Helensvale and PBC in the junior boys finals to be contested on October 16-17, with Mountain Creek SHS winning 4-3-27 to 2-2-14.
Mountain Creek SHS coach Stuart Currington said: “We needed that aggression on top of the ball rather than sitting back and letting the other team have it.
“We wanted a second effort so if the ball went to ground, then don’t let it just bounce and that seemed to work.’’
He said it was not such a bad thing that his team went straight from a pool game into the qualifying match at the end of the day.
“It is more game time the better, playing together because we don’t get to play a great deal of games.’’
The clash when down to the wire, and when the full-time hooter sounded Park Ridge SHS players slumped to the ground, highlighting the effort they put into the match.
