THE Gold Coast’s development industry appears to be largely withstanding the COVID-19 downturn, with some of the biggest projects the city has ever seen under construction.
These gleaming new towers have created thousands of jobs and will reshape the skyline in the next three years.
They are among more than $14 billion worth of development proposed or already under construction in the city.
These are the top 10 biggest developments rising from the ground today.
1: The Lanes (Sunland Group)
A $1.3 billion mini-city being built at The Lakes precinct in Clear Island Waters.
At its heart are four mid-rise towers range from 10 to 12 storeys which are valued at $250 million.
They will have a range of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses with views of the lakefront, Hinterland and Gold Coast skyline.
The first residents will arrive in mid to late 2021.
2: The Dorsett (Star Entertainment Group)
A $450 million tower now under construction at the Star Casino’s Broadbeach Island.
A six-level dining precinct which will make up the base of the 53-storey tower and feature multiple new restaurants.
The high-rise will include a Dorsett hotel and the residential Star Residences complex, spread across 316 hotel rooms and a further 423 one and two-bedroom apartments.
It is on track for a 2022 opening despite the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, with construction continuing unaffected.
3: The Ocean (Meriton)
A 76-storey supertower under construction in Surfers Paradise which will become a new dominant feature of the Glitter Strip.
Its penthouse will sit higher than its equivalent in the iconic Q1.
Construction of the tower began more than a year ago and reached its 20th storey last month.
It is expected to be completed in mid-2022.
The first occupants are set to begin moving in late next year to the residential levels, which will run from levels 34 to 57.
These levels will have 238 units, 102 of which have already been sold.
The lower 33 floors will feature a Meriton Suites hotel and exclusive beach club.
4: 252 Hedges Ave (Sunland)
Sunland Group’s $250 million luxury tower is rising over the Gold Coast’s most exclusive stretch of road.
Just last week it reached a major milestone as concrete was poured on its first residential levels.
It is expected a new level will be poured each week, with up to 30 floors completed by Christmas.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, construction remains on schedule and the tower expected to open to its first residents in mid-2022.
5: Natura (Spyre Group)
Demolition has begun of a Burleigh tower to make way for a new high-end tower which will take its place - the 17-storey Natura.
The $77 million, 33-unit Burleigh Heads luxury tower proved enormously popular when it went to market earlier this year, with nearly 80 per cent of its units sold in just a single weekend, primarily to downsizers.
6: Gold Coast Airport (Queensland Airports)
Work began late last year on the $500 million expansion of Gold Coast Airport's terminal and complex.
The terminal expansion work adds to an ongoing new $50 million hotel build. An interior refurbishment of the existing terminal making it “more modern and efficient” is planned during the next two years.
The southern expansion of the terminal opens its first stage to the public in mid-2021. The opening of the airport’s first hotel, a Rydges with rooftop bar, is expected later this year.
7: Signature Broadbeach (Little Projects)
Construction is well underway on a high-end tower at Broadbeach - the $220 million, 35-storey Signature Broadbeach.
It is the brainchild of rich lister and former Toll Holdings boss Paul Little and will feature 245 units.
Construction began on the Philip Ave site last year and it is expected to open in early 2022.
8: The Spot (Shintaku Australia)
One of the quirkiest developments the Gold Coast has ever seen is under construction at Broadbeach - a dog-themed tower called The Spot.
The $20 million, eight-storey tower by developer Shintaku Australia is on track to open at Christmas.
The pet-friendly project’s centrepiece will be a rooftop dog park and there are plans for a hydrobath station to wash playful pups.
The rooftop will also have a community recreation area with a barbecue and communal vegetable garden.
9: Infinity (Bassar Construction Group)
Construction began last month on a new 39-storey tower called Infinity at Broadbeach.
The first Gold Coast project for Sydney-based Bassar Construction group
The building, on the corner of Surf Pde and George St, is due for completion in early 2022.
10: Jewel (Yuhu Group)
The giant $1.4 billion, three-tower development is close to completion, nearly a decade after it was first proposed.
It is expected to finally open later this year as landscaping and fitting out continue.
