THE first part of The Star Gold Coast’s new 53-storey tower is set to be finished in the next six months but locals will have to wait until 2022 to set foot inside.

A 50-metre crane and 13 semi-trailers have signalled the start of above ground works on the tower, set to be the first in Broadbeach of that size.

Work has started on a six-level dining precinct which will make up the base of the structure and feature multiple new restaurants.

Destination Gold Coast Consortium Project Director Jaime Cali said the project was expected to finish next April.

“We got through all of our demolition, our infrastructure and piling works, so now we’ll start to see the structure come out of the ground,” she said.

“The podium actually connects into the Star Grand and our existing retail facility.

“(The tower) will be completed in 2022 and that’s when we’ll see people and businesses start to move in.”

The high-rise, a Dorsett hotel and apartments building, will host 316 hotel rooms and a further 423 one and two-bedroom apartments.

The apartments are expected to be leased out a year before opening.

Star Gold Coast COO Jessica Mellor said the casino planned for a number of accommodation options ahead of opening.

“One of which will be short letting accommodation pool for The Star,” she said.

“The rest will be privately owned.

“We really believe in the growth of tourism, so this really gives us the capacity in hotel and accommodation over our peak period.

“It also attracts a different market to our property. This is a four-star hotel, we’ve got a five-star in The Star Grand, and the Darling Suites which is a six-star offering.

“So it’s really about diversifying and opening it up to more tourists.”
