The number of deaths associated with domestic violence in NSW is “too many”, the state’s top cop has declared as footage of the final months of a Newcastle mother’s life has emerged on TikTok.
Mackenzie Anderson, 21, was allegedly stabbed more than 20 times in her Mayfield apartment by her ex-boyfriend Tyrone Thompson on Friday night.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb had earlier vowed to The Daily Telegraph she would launch a review into the alleged murder to determine if police “could have done more”.
On Thursday, Commissioner Webb told 2GB Ms Anderson had paid “the ultimate price” and said it was a “priority” for the force to tackle the state‘s domestic violence rate and to help victims stay out of reach of alleged abusers.
“It‘s tragic, that whole incident is tragic,” Comm Webb added.
“Certainly it is a priority for me, but it will take us to work with everyone in the system to make an improvement.”
“It‘s very difficult, but obviously police … need to work with victims to try and keep them engaged.”
It comes as TikTok videos online reveal Ms Anderson was “falling in love with life” with her closest friends, new boyfriend and her toddler in the months and weeks before she was allegedly murdered.
New vision has now emerged of Ms Anderson‘s life before it was cut short, documented online through video app TikTok for her 28,900 followers.
Clips shared by the 21 year-old on her account included precious video footage of her baking and singing with her toddler and a series of videos where they travelled to the Northern Rivers with one of Ms Anderson‘s friends.
“My love bug,” she captioned further footage of her child, referring to them as ”my caterpillar” in another clip.
A third video pinned to the top of her profile charted her child’s journey after receiving surgery for a cleft palate, while another captured by Ms Anderson featured celebrations for their first birthday party.
Other clips shared via TikTok showed Ms Anderson making dance videos with her new boyfriend, as well as sunrise beach swims and nights out with friends.
“Falling in love with life again,” she wrote in one video.
Another was captioned: “Tomorrow isn’t promised, make the most of life, appreciate the little things, live like there isn’t a tomorrow, love like you’ve never loved before, keep the ones who care and love you close. Find peace.”
Ms Anderson also delved into her mental health in several TikToks, revealing her battle with depression and sharing she hoped her child would “never know” the same struggle.
It comes as state’s first female police commissioner has vowed to launch a review into the alleged murder of a young Newcastle mother to determine if they “could have done more”.
Commissioner Karen Webb said it “does not get much worse” than Ms Anderson’s alleged murder.
“It is tragic, it’s heartbreaking,” Ms Webb said.
“To think that this young woman in the prime of her life was allegedly murdered in that way, it doesn’t get much worse than that really.
“We always review cases like this, could we have done more, and I’ll certainly ask that question of that case and others like it.
“Could we have done more what else can we do?
“If anyone heard something or saw something that‘s why we call Triple-0 or Crimestoppers. “We will do anything to protect people in these circumstances.”
Speaking generally Ms Webb has long been open about her ambition to improve the state’s handling of domestic violence, announcing it as a priority immediately after being unveiled as the new top cop in November.
She then told The Daily Telegraph she wanted support for victims, mainly “child abuse victims, victims of assault, sexual assault and domestic violence”, to be part of the legacy of her tenure.
Ms Webb flagged the possibility of putting dedicated abuse officers in local police area commands.
“Maybe not in every command, I think we just need that cohort of officers that (are) really good at it,” she said last year.
On Tuesday night thousands of Newcastle locals gathered in the city’s CBD to rally against domestic violence.
The rally followed an enormous outpouring of grief from the young woman’s friends and family on social media, while one relative admitted they were “doing it tough”.
The Daily Telegraph
previously revealed Ms Anderson had invited Thompson over to her unit on Friday where they drank together during the day.
Police will allege an argument unfolded and he left before returning and launching the fatal attack.
Detectives remained at the scene on Wednesday gathering evidence, while blood can still be seen on the patio outside her unit.
Thompson was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, aggravated enter dwelling with intent and also breaching an AVO.
He faced Newcastle Local Court on Monday and was refused bail to reappear in May.
