The man police intend to charge with the stabbing murder of his former partner had been released on parole only 16 days ago for domestic violence offences against her.

Tyrone Thompson, 22, was also the subject of an apprehended domestic violence order, which was strengthened before his release to order that he not contact Mackenzie Anderson.

But police will allege he went to Ms Anderson’s Mayfield home on Friday night.

The woman, 21, died after sustaining injuries described as so “horrendous”, it left emergency services stunned.

As well as the fatal injuries to Ms Anderson, police also found a young child inside the home, covered in her blood.

“I’ve just spent the last 20 minutes or so viewing body-worn footage and it was a horrendous scene, horrendous,” Newcastle City Commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said.

“There was also a three-year-old child at the location. The child was covered in blood but it appears, thankfully, that the child was not injured and is being cared for by relatives.”

Thompson was in John Hunter Hospital late yesterday, awaiting surgery for a hand injury.

He was arrested when police arrived at Ms Anderson’s unit and had complained of a wound to his hand.

Police had been called about 10.40pm following reports that a man had broken into the 21-year-old mother’s unit.

Officers arrived to find Ms Anderson critically injured from multiple stab wounds. She died at the scene.

Thompson will most likely be charged with murder when he is well enough to be interviewed by officers. Depending on the surgery, that could be as long as three days.

He has not been charged with anything as of yet, and will continue to remain under police guard in hospital.

Thompson had been released from custody on March 9.

He had served just four months and two weeks of a maximum nine-month sentence he had been given for a domestic violence incident at Ms Anderson’s Mayfield flat on October 24 last year.

He was convicted of one count each of stalk and intimidate, common assault and malicious damage.

An ADVO was also placed on Thompson in a bid to protect Ms Anderson, with the conditions strengthened to include that he not contact his former partner upon his release.
