The man charged with murdering young Newcastle mum MacKenzie Anderson allegedly stabbed her more than 20 times and then stomped on her head, in one final act of abuse.
Tyrone Thompson allegedly unleashed the horrific attack on his ex-partner about 10.40pm on Friday.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal that Thompson spent much of Friday with Ms Anderson at her Crebert St home in the northern suburb of Mayfield, where the pair had been drinking.
Police allege that the 22-year-old left the property before returning later, at which point he tried to break in – leading a panicked Ms Anderson to call triple-zero.
By the time help arrived Thompson had allegedly entered the home and killed Ms Anderson, with police finding her outside on the front veranda where she took her final breaths.
Thompson was arrested and taken to John Hunter Hospital with cuts to his hands.
Police sources said he had since claimed that the injuries were suffered at the hands of his alleged victim.
A young boy who was home at the time of the alleged murder was found by officers covered in blood when they arrived.
Ms Anderson’s death has led to an outpouring of emotion from her shattered friends and family.
Newcastle Police City Commander, Superintendent Wayne Humphrey also described the alleged crime as one of the most “horrendous” he had seen.
Supt Humphrey’s comments came after he watched the body worn cameras of officers who tried to attend to Ms Anderson.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to aid Ms Anderson’s family in the wake of her death.
“This is the least we can do,” Emily Adams, the organiser of the fundraiser that has already raised $18,000, wrote.
Thompson was on Sunday charged with murder, breaching an AVO against Ms Anderson and aggravated enter dwelling with intent.
The alleged murderer had only been released on parole 16 days ago after serving just four months and two weeks of a maximum nine-month sentence for assaulting Ms Anderson last October.
Thompson made a brief appearance at Newcastle Local Court on Monday morning, accompanied by three guards as he scurried into the perspex box in the courtroom.
Wearing a prison greens – including shorts that exposed his leg tattoos – he sat up in seat with a stern look on his face, while his right arm was heavily bandaged from the elbow down.
Thompson made no application for bail and the matter was adjourned until May 26.
He is due to face Hornsby Local Court on Tuesday on an unrelated matter.
