BIOGRAPHY

TIM Murray says he is an economist, businessman, and president of the Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club.

He was born at Waverly Hospital, and after he won a scholarship to China, Tim says he built businesses there for 20 years.

He now runs his own financial analysis firm in Tamarama, where he and his wife Pauline, an early childhood teacher, are raising their three young kids.

Tim says he is committed to national climate and energy policy to reduce emissions and build the renewable energy industry and jobs of the future.

He says he supports investment in public education, including a new public high school for Wentworth.

Tim says he and Labor are campaigning for housing affordability, to defend Medicare, to protect the ABC from funding cuts and political interference, to establish a National Integrity Commission, and to save South Head as public space for future generations.

He says he believes that government should support the rights and dignity of all Australians, no matter who you are, who you love or how you worship.

Tim says he is ambitious for an open, innovative and forward-looking Australia.

Q&A

1. Do you think we need a new public secondary school in the Wentworth electorate?

Yes – parents need a public co-ed school in addition to our great but stressed Rose Bay Secondary College

2. What are your thoughts on the current rate of development?

As the second most densely populated electorate in Australia we should focus on infrastructure and services in the Wentworth area, and less on development.

3. Do you support the proposed development in the national park at South Head?

Yes. This is public space and part of our heritage. The NSW Liberal Party and the developers should keep their hands off South Head.

4. Should we make changes to negative gearing?

Yes. We need to level the playing field so more younger people can own their own home - our kids will thank us.

5. What are the key elements of your tax policy?

Tax is about fairness. Multinationals must pay their fair share, unsustainable tax loopholes should be closed, and then we can better fund schools, hospitals and give 10 million working Australians a bigger better tax cut.

6. Do you have a stance on corporate political donations?

I support more transparency, banning anonymous donations above $50, and banning all donations from foreign companies, which the Liberal Party still accepts.

7. What is the most important health related issue?

Defending Medicare and quality aged care so we can properly fund prevention and care for all Australians.

8. What support should be given to businesses?

Businesses – big and small – want certainty on climate and energy policy to encourage investment in renewable energy, and get prices down for everyone.

9. What emphasis should placed on funding to the arts?

Arts funding is essential, as is protecting the independence and funding of the ABC which supports Australian artists, filmmakers and creative industries.

10. How should Australia proceed with regards to immigration?

Our thriving economy and society is a product of immigration and we should not blame our new Australians for the failure to invest in infrastructure, schools and city planning.

11. Should we change how we process asylum seekers?

We need more compassion, children should not be languishing in detention without proper medical treatment, and we should take up the offer now by New Zealand to accept asylum seekers from Manus and Nauru.

12. What action should be taken with regard to climate change?

I support sourcing 50 per cent of our energy from renewable sources by 2030 and reducing emissions by 45 per cent by 2030.

13. Do you support live animal export?

No. It should be phased out immediately.

14. Do you think we need to tackle law and order differently?

The police and magistrates in this area do a great job.

15. How should we continue to move towards reconciliation with indigenous people?

We can start by really listening the mob from around here – the Gadigal and Bidigal people.
