BIOGRAPHY

LICIA Heath says she is well known across Sydney’s eastern suburbs and the seat of Wentworth for running a high-profile community campaign agitating all levels of government for a new public high school in the area.

She said that via the CLOSEast campaign, she has negotiated with all tiers of government and has worked collaboratively across political parties to achieve outcomes on this issue.

Licia says she has worked tirelessly, meeting with state MPs, councils, mayors, and planning teams, as well as presenting at local P&Cs, holding community forums, and uniting numerous stakeholders in the interest of local families and residents.

She says she is also known for her involvement with the not-for-profit organisation, Women for Election Australia (WFEA), a non-partisan group committed to increasing the number of women in public office at local, state and federal levels.

WFEA recently held their second annual conference “Women in the House” at NSW Parliament House.

Licia says she has spent the last 19 years in the asset management sector and is a Wentworth resident and a parent. Her policies can be found at www.liciaheath.com.au.

Q&A

1. Do you think we need a new public secondary school in the Wentworth electorate?

Yes. A birth spike, poor demographic forecasting and the selling of high school sites means a new public high school is urgently required

2. What are your thoughts on the current rate of development?

Residential development must stop until the commensurate social infrastructure (schools, roads, pre-schools, sewerage, etc) has caught up.

3. Do you support the proposed development in the national park at South Head?

No. Public parks are for public use, not private profit.

4. Should we make changes to negative gearing?

Yes. Reduce this option to one property only.

5. What are the key elements of your tax policy?

Closing corporate tax loopholes and reducing regressive tax concessions in our system that are no longer relevant in today’s landscape with negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions.

6. Do you have a stance on corporate political donations?

Yes. Donations need to be radically changed to include banning donations from foreign interests, increasing transparency and removing the ability to aggregate donations.

7. What is the most important health related issue?

Access to public, high quality healthcare for all Australians.

8. What support should be given to businesses?

Aiding in providing an abundant and skilled workforce.

9 . What emphasis should be placed on funding to the arts?

Recognition that the arts are just as critical as STEM and so is providing the commensurate funding.

10. How should Australia proceed with regards to immigration?

Immigration is a vital part of Australia’s future prosperity, however it must be monitored and encouraged in the areas of greatest need.

11. Should we change how we process asylum seekers?

Yes. We should close down Manus and Nauru and reinstate onshore processing of asylum seekers that occurs in an accurate and timely manner.

12. What action should be taken with regard to climate change?

We should stay committed to the Paris agreement by reducing our emissions and reliance on fossil fuels while increasing our use of renewables.

13. Do you support live animal export?

No. This trade should be stopped immediately.

14. Do you think we need to tackle law and order differently?

No. But we do need to enforce current laws more expediently and consistently.

15. How should we continue to move towards reconciliation with indigenous people?

Begin with recognition that this land was taken by force and negotiate a treaty that, done correctly, doesn’t undermine the sovereignty of the Australian nation. And we need to establish a formal forum for indigenous voices to be heard and involved in the development and implementation of policies that affect them.
