Woman arrested after body found in Freshwater unit

POLICE have arrested a woman after the body of 81-year-old May Ritchie was found in Freshwater overnight. Mrs Ritchie has been described as a “much loved” local who “said hello to everyone”.

POLICE have arrested a woman after the body of “much-loved local identity” May Ritchie, 81, was found in Freshwater overnight.

Mrs Ritchie was found in her Foam St unit by police about 8pm after receiving calls over concern for her welfare.

A short time later, officers arrested a 49-year-old woman near the scene.

The woman they arrested is believed to be from Narraweena and is not related to Ms Ritchie.

The 49-year-old was taken to Manly police station where she is helping police with their inquiries, but no charges have yet been laid.

The Manly Daily understands Mrs Ritchie was originally from Scotland. A neighbour who asked not to be named described the elderly woman as a “much-loved local identity”.

Another neighbour told the Manly Daily that Ms Ritchie was “a very pleasant woman who always said hello to everyone”.

A crime scene was established with specialist investigators from the State Crime Command Homicide Squad also in attendance.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are have spoken to neighbours and appealing for anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to them to contact them urgently.
