NSW postcodes fighting the biggest weekly spikes in new positive Covid cases

Sharp weekly spikes in Sydney suburbs reveal the harsh truth of Covid in some areas, with one postcode reporting almost 500 cases in a week. See the full breakdown.

With health authorities urgently calling for residents to get vaccinated in an attempt to curb rising Covid infections across the state, Sydney saw some of its biggest spikes in cases since the start of the Delta outbreak just last week (September 2-9).

With many cases unlinked to known cases, a NSW Health spokeswoman said it was important for residents and visitors to southwest Sydney and western Sydney, where the majority of recently reported unlinked cases live, to keep gettting tested.

The postcode taking in Edmondson Park and Ingleburn is leading in its vaccination rates, with more than 90 per cent of residents fully vaccinated.

Postcodes lagging on vaccinations include Auburn, Chippendale, Ultimo, Badgerys Creek, Menangle Park, Claymore and Blairmont. All have a fully vaccinated rate between 20 and 29 per cent.

Here are some of the postcodes with the largest weekly spike in cases since the outbreak started on June 16.

LIVERPOOL (2170)

The postcode containing the suburbs of Casula, Liverpool and Moorebank saw 99 new cases recorded on September 8, bringing the spike in cases since September 3 to 514 cases.

The postcode recorded its first spike of 165 cases in the week after August 15, and has since seen cases explode.

The postcode has recorded 1463 cases since the outbreak began.

The postcode taking in the suburbs of Guildford, Guildford West, Old Guildford and Yennora saw a spike of 90 new cases on August 31 alone.

Last week, the postcode has recorded more than 424 positive cases.

Guildford lost young mother-of-four Jamila Yaghi after she died at her home on September 1 after being tested on August 31.

A total of 471 cases were recorded in the postcode in the week leading up to Ms Yaghi’s tragic death.

The majority of cases have been unlinked local transmissions, and between 20 and 29 per cent of residents are fully vaccinated.

The postcode has recorded 1641 cases since the outbreak began on June 16.

MOUNT DRUITT (2770)

The postcode containing suburbs including Mount Druitt, Bidwill and Minchinbury saw a spike of 338 cases last week.

The postcode recorded the highest number of cases, 69, in a day on September 3.

Most cases have been unlinked local transmissions, with between 30 and 39 per cent of residents fully vaccinated.

The postcode has recorded 1192 cases since the outbreak began.

AUBURN (2144)

The postcode for Auburn and Auburn South saw a spike of 334 cases last week, with its daily record of 68 new cases recorded on August 31.

Most cases have been unlinked local transmissions and 20 to 29 per cent of residents are fully vaccinated.

The postcode has recorded more than 980 cases since the outbreak began.

MERRYLANDS (2160)

The postcode taking in Merrylands and Merrylands West recorded a spike of 300 cases last week, with between 30 and 39 per cent of residents fully vaccinated.

The postcode recorded its record of 57 new cases on September 1, with most cases unlinked local transmissions.

The postcode has recorded 1139 cases since the outbreak began.

BANKSTOWN (2200)

The postcode for Bankstown, Condell Park and Manahan recorded 285 positive cases last week.

The area recorded its highest daily spike of 52 cases on September 1, with most cases unlinked local transmissions.

The postcode has recorded 1001 cases since the outbreak began, with between 30 and 39 per cent of residents fully vaccinated.

CHULLORA (2109)

The postcode for Chullora, Greenacre and Mount Lewis saw a spike of 280 positive cases last week.

The area saw its largest daily spike of 49 cases on September 2, and has recorded 819 cases since the outbreak began.

The majority of cases have been unlinked local transmissions, and between 20 and 29 per cent of residents are fully vaccinated.

Dubbo in regional NSW has born the brunt of the outbreak outside Sydney with 157 cases recorded last week

The postcode encompassing Dubbo saw its largest daily spike of 37 new cases on August 23, with most cases recorded since the outbreak coming from known local transmissions.

Between 30 and 39 per cent of residents are fully vaccinated, and between 80 and 89 per cent have had one jab.

The postcode has recorded 596 positive cases since the outbreak began.
