WILDLIFE campaigners have launched a fundraising appeal to buy an animal ambulance to help native wildlife hit by cars.

The team from Sydney Wildlife, including young campaigner 13-year-old Kayleigh Greig, want to gather $50,000 towards an RV-style van to save some of the hundreds of creatures injured across the northern beaches and wider Sydney.

According to the Wildlife Roadkill Prevention Association, 350 creatures, mostly marsupials, have been killed on the peninsula in the past year – and that’s not including babies in pouches, who often survive impacts but later die if they’re not rescued.

As reported in the Manly Daily, experts say a mobile unit staffed by volunteers, could offer lifesaving care.

They estimate it will cost $200,000 in total, but the initial target will help get the scheme moving.

Oxford Falls Grammar student and Pittwater’s Young Citizen of the Year Kayleigh, whose mother Lynleigh, from Elanora Heights is a well-known wildlife rescuer, said: “Wild animals are every bit as important as people and pets.

“The mobile clinic will be dedicated to giving them quick treatment so that they can go about their business of making people happy.”

The family, along with Joan Reid from Sydney Wildlife, even tried to take a kangaroo to Parliament House where they met NSW Minister for the Environment Mark Spearman to talk about their plan.

“We will be applying for the grants suggested by our ministers,” Mrs Greig said.

“However, as we don’t know whether or not we will be successful with our application, we have decided to start fundraising.”

Joan Reid said the vehicles could also visit disasters such as bushfires.

“We have vets that have offered to volunteer already, and we have Sydney Wildlife volunteers.

“I don’t think staff is the problem – it’s money.”

Campaigners also want more fences along busy routes to keep animals away- as well as special crossings. But they say the RMS has failed to keep it’s promise for bridges along Mona Vale Rd East.
